About the Author
Huey Newton was co-founder and leader of the Black Panther Party, and its chief theoretician. In 1967 Newton was arrested and charged with killing an Oakland police officer during a dispute, leading to a much-publicized "Free Huey" campaign. In 1980, Newton earned a doctorate in philosophy from the University of California. He died in 1989. Toni Morrison is a Nobel-prize winning American author, editor and professor. Among the best known of her novels are The Bluest Eye, Song of Solomon, and Beloved, which won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1988. Elaine Brown became, in 1974, the first and only woman to lead the Black Panther Party. Today, as an activist, writer and popular lecturer, she promotes the vision of an inclusive and egalitarian society, focusing on resolving problems of race, gender oppression and class disparity in the United States.

In the cases I am aware of, these versions are missing Chapter 8, Appendices A and B, the Preface, Suggested Reading, and Index. Check the page count: The complete book should be 422 pages plus 10 pages of front matter (with Roman numerals); the abridged versions are typically advertised to be only 336 pages. I apologize to all readers who have unintentionally ended up with abridged versions. The abridgments were made without my knowledge and I have no control over their publication. In some parts of the world the price for an abridged version is actually more than the U.S. price for the complete hardcover version (ISBN 978-0201380279).

Best book available at this level

This is best text on Statistical Mechanics and Thermo available at the advanced undergrad level. None of the other texts at this level can compete: Reif contains eveything but doesn't distinguish between important ideas and unimportant details. Kittel and Kroemer is too terse. Baierlein is too long-winded and idiosyncratic. Schroeder's text strikes just the right level: the big ideas are clearly explained and well-motivated. I like the order of presentation. The math is at the right level, the problems are excellent. There is even some humor. I have only two (minor) complaints: 1) the derivation of the entropy of an ideal gas involves some uncertainty-principle-hand-waving when a straight-forward counting of particle-in-a-box states would have done the job. 2) There is little or no discussion of transport properties: diffusion, thermal conductitivy, viscosity, and the like. If you don't like this book, then you won't like the others on this subject.

Of the 20 books of Roman Antiquities (from the earliest times to 264 BCE) we have the first 9 complete; most of 10 and 11; and later extracts and an epitome of the whole. Dionysius studied the best available literary sources (mainly annalistic and other historians) and possibly some public documents. His work and that of Livy are our only continuous and detailed independent narratives of early Roman history.

Dionysius was author also of essays on literature covering rhetoric, Greek oratory, Thucydides, and how to imitate the best models in literature.

The Loeb Classical Library publishes a two-volume edition of the critical essays; the edition of Roman Antiquities is in seven volumes.

A Book That Gets To The Point

This was probably one of my favorite books in law school since it was brief and to the point. Although I noticed many similarities in the content of this book with my contracts book from a couple years ago, I suppose that is to be expected with this topic of the law. You will also be pleased to know that the font size in this book is manageable--you will not strain your eyes reading the information for hours on end. There are not many excerpts of Article II of the UCC in here so you will want to purchase a rule book as well.
