About the Author

Cecil Costa

Cecil Costa, also known as Eduardo Campos in Latin countries, is a Euro-Brazilian freelance developer who has been learning about computers since he got his first PC (an AT 286) in 1990. From then on, he kept learning about programming languages, computer architecture, and computer science theory. Learning and teaching are his passions; this is the reason why he worked as a trainer and an author. He has been giving on-site courses for companies such as Ericsson, Roche, TVE (a Spanish television channel), and a lot of other companies. He is also the author of Swift Cookbook and soon he will also write a book called Reactive Swift Programming. Nowadays, he teaches through online platforms, helping people from every part of the world. In 2008, he founded his own company, Conglomo Limited (http://www.conglomo.es/), which offers development and training programs both on site and online. Over his professional career, he has created projects by himself and also worked for different companies, from small to big ones, such as IBM, Qualcomm, Spanish Lottery, and DIA%. Good Examples of Building Swift/Xcode Apps Using a Variety of Frameworks

I picked up this book because I've been working my way through Swift by Example (also published by Packt), and this looked like a similar kind of book that would teach me how to use some of the frameworks (both Apple and 3rd-party) available to use in iOS development.

This is not a beginning book. It assumes that you are familiar with both Xcode and Swift, and after a brief review, it plunges into seven very different projects that range from manipulating photos to creating a 2D game to creating an app for an Apple Watch. Aside from a bit of non-traditional English (clearly comprehensible although obviously written by a non-native author), I have found this book to be, so far, to be a very worthwhile purchase. I'll update my review if my opinion changes by the end of the book!

Chapter 1, "Exploring Xcode," reviews Xcode and Swift features, including: keyboard shortcuts, versioning (Git), testing with playground, debugging (use of _is_ operator, lldb, Fabric), new Swift features (lifting of _let_ limitations, _as_ operator, and introduction of _Set_ to replace _NSSet_).

Chapter 2, "Creating a City Information App with Customized Table Views," uses the SwiftyJSON framework to work with JSON messages.

Chapter 3, "Creating a Photo Sharing App," teaches how to use the camera, edit a photo, and share it using a social framework.

Chapter 4, "Simulating Home Automation with HomeKit," shows how to simulate a house with various devices and create an app to retrieve device info as well as change their settings.

Chapter 5, "Health Analyzing App Using HealthKit," teaches the use of HealthKit, as well as a 3rd-party framework, iOS Chart.

Solid, practical, useful.

I really like this book. The introduction which covers Xcode (keyboard shortcuts, version control, testing a UIView in playground, etc.) were helpful, and you can tell this was written by working developers. The sample apps are well presented and the practical approach is carried forward throughout. I think anyone developing apps with Xcode would benefit from this book.

Great gateway book for learning Swift...

I purchased this book from Packt publishing, as I have done a lot with other titles lately.

The book is pretty good. I'd probably give it 4.5 stars if that were an option. Very few books will ever get 5 stars.

The book starts off with a pretty quick overview on xcode, etc. and then jumps right into talking you through making 7 different apps.

The strategy of walking you through is pretty good, it get's your hands dirty and your head around the kinds of things you have to do to make an app. It's not designed to be a technical resource and the book doesn't cover everything, but it does a great job with focusing on several aspects of making an app using swift and some of the right things to do and the wrong things to avoid. They don't spend any time with CoreData but they do throw in a watch app.

Overall it's a great book...probably not the first book on iOS programming someone should read but it's a great hands-on walkthrough for someone new to swift.

It's a very good technical book for what it's intended for.

About the Author
James Trefil has authored or coauthored numerous books on science for the general audience. His interest in scientific literacy began with a contributed essay to E. D. Hirsch’s Cultural Literacy and continued with his work on the Content Review Board for the National Science Education Standards. He serves as a regular contributor and science consultant for Smithsonian magazine and as a science commentator on National Public Radio. He received undergraduate degrees from the University of Illinois and Oxford University. After receiving a doctorate in theoretical physics from Stanford University, he held post-doctorate and faculty appointments in Europe and the United States. James Trefil is the Clarence Robinson Professor of Physics at George Mason University. He has made contributions to research in elementary particle physics, fluid mechanics, medical physics (including cancer research), and the earth sciences. Trefil was recently awarded the prestigious Gemant Prize of the American Institute of Physics for his efforts to present science to the public.

Robert M. Hazen is the Clarence Robinson Professor of Earth Science at George Mason University and Staff Scientist at the Carnegie Institution of Washington’s Geophysical Laboratory. Hazen developed a fascination for rocks and minerals as a child growing up in mineral-rich Northern New Jersey, and he pursued that interest as an undergraduate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. After receiving a doctorate in earth sciences from Harvard University, he spent a year at Cambridge University as a NATO Postdoctoral Fellow. In addition to teaching courses on scientific literacy, scientific ethics, symmetry in art and sciences, and visual thinking, he performs research on materials at high pressure. His current studies on the origin of life explore the hypothesis that life arose in a deep, high –pressure environment. Hazen is active in presenting science to the public. He developed a 60-lecture video version of this textbook, Great principles of Science, which is available nationally through The Teaching Company. He has appeared on numerous radio and television shows, including NOVA and Today. His most recent popular book is The Diamond Makers, which recounts the discovery of a method to make synthetic diamonds. Robert Hazen is also a part-time professional trumpeter.

Becoming Scientifically Literate in Today's World

I am reading the book in conjunction with The Teaching Company's "The Joy of Science," which is presented by the Professor Hazen. The purpose of both is give you a background in the sciences-Physics, Chemistry, Earth Sciences and Biology-to make you scientifically literate for today's technical world. This sounds impossible because of the scope of the task. However through clear writing, examples found in the everyday world and excllent illustrations they achieve their goal.

The book is geared for a nontechnical person. It is not designed to prepare someone to be a scientist or engineer. Thus the authors keep the mathematics to a minimum. The book is very readable. As a result of the book I now understand the basics of relativity and genetics. Both are areas I had trouble before.

Seller was dishonest.

Was really upset when I received this book, the seller described it as the instructors manual it was not, and I didn’t want to spend the money to ship it back, it was a heavy book. As for the book itself it’s excellent for secondary school students in art, I would highly recommend it.

This book is crap-tacular!

If my sock drawer was organized like this book...there would never be a matching pair of socks. The old socks and the new socks would cling together in a wad of static electricity, making it painful to dare try and pull them apart and match them up in any other way. The book lacks fabric softener, and reading it is itchy torture.

But seriously...this book tries to be "smart" by organizing the chapters into "subjects for art",and it doesn't work.

It's stupid!

Dean Sickler is the Director and core instructor of Dundean Studios, a working and teaching studio in Chatham, NJ. He has been in the painting and decorating business since 1975 having started as an apprentice painter in Los Angeles. In 1986 he founded Dundean Studios as a decorative arts studio and has since executed decorative and art commissions across North America. He has been active in conservation and restoration work and holds a BA in Art & Art History from University of Toronto. In 1998, Dundean Studios evolved into an independent decorative arts school and studio. It has since provided instruction to over a thousand professional faux finishers, painters and inspired amateurs with an emphasis on product knowledge, technique and execution. Dean has a national reputation for being in the forefront of the new water-borne technologies and is regularly consulted by multi-national manufacturers in product improvements and color design. He lectures across the country on numerous topics involving the decorating and design field and has exhibited and demonstrated in many European and US cities.

The fastest way to learn about real world color

I'm fortunate in that I went to art school and I work for a company obsessed with color, particularly pigment. I've had to learn the hard way how to color match by eye. You don't have to learn that way because Dean Sickler has made it easy for you. The Keys to Color breaks down the barriers of mystery put in place by housepaint companies and decorative product companies. They intentionally make it hard for the consumer to understand how they arrived at a certain paint mixture to match what you wanted. They give the color a goofy name and you buy it. But what happens (far too frequently) is you get the paint home, put some up on the wall and it doesn't look right. It's wrong. What's worse, you don't know how to correct it. Well, this book actually teaches you to look at color more accurately and actually how to correct color on the fly.

Dean talks about some pretty lofty subjects in this book. Color systems. Saturation. Metamerism. Color temperature. Using Complimentary colors to adjust. Color Bias. Luckily for you, he doesn't overwhelm you while doing it. Even the seasoned professional decorator is going to get something out of this book. If this book doesn't help you become a better decorative (or artistic) painter, then maybe you should have taken that job in accounting. You will learn about color and as importantly be able to apply that knowledge tomorrow.

Must have for all artists, designers and painters!

Finally someone writes a book for artists and designers about color, and who better than the popular Mr. Sickler who is an accomplished artist and instructor.

This book totally changed the way I see color and is overflowing with easy to understand and incredibly useful information including coloring paints, plasters and glazes, how to make your own colors, match existing colors, and working with metallics to name a few. Working with color and light was one of my favorite chapters and I appreciated the glossary to study up on some forgotten terms.

I said this is a great book for artists and designers, but it would also be great for art teachers, painters, or even diyers who want to implement the knowledge learned through this book in their own home.

Understanding color for fine artists

Dean Sickler's book is not just for professional decorators but for professional artists or anyone who is interested in color mixing. We have been taught in the best art schools that yellow and blue make green. Moreover, most books on color continue to propogate this traditon. While Dean was not the first to show this is a myth, he is among the first. He explains the reason why you don't always get the color you expect and does this in a very clear, simple way giving numerous visual examples. More important, he shows clearly how you can get the mixture you desire which, for me as an artist, makes this book invaluable. He has already saved me dollars for now I know what paints will give me my results and how to mix them. The more we know about the color tubes we buy, the less money will be wasted.

Almost everyone knows what Lord Alfred "Bosie" Douglas meant by "the Love that dare not speak its name"--but what happened after that name was dragged into court? In Oscar Wilde's case, his affair with Douglas, that minor poet and major pretty boy, was as neatly resolved as the Greek tragedy it resembled. Just three years after his release from prison on charges of "gross indecency," Wilde died broken, impoverished, and alone in a Parisian hotel. But Bosie himself lived on for nearly 45 contentious years after Wilde's death: an entire lifetime, in effect, during which he married, converted to Catholicism, conducted an epic feud with Wilde's literary executor, Robert Ross, and renounced everything about his former life, including Wilde himself.

In Bosie, Douglas Murray has used previously unavailable letters and manuscripts to construct a nuanced portrait of the aesthetes' golden boy, including his second life as a devoutly undecadent squire. Born into an ancient family with a memorably lunatic streak, Lord Douglas as a young man was charming, dissolute, and almost preternaturally handsome. (Jude Law played him in the 1998 film Wilde, and the resemblance is uncanny.) Regrettably, his gift for scandal often overshadowed his other talents; Murray for one is convinced that Douglas was one of the great English poets of his time, a master of the sonnet form who has been shamefully neglected by scholars and readers alike. Here, then, is the real tragedy: if Douglas had lived less he might have been remembered more.

Yet Murray doesn't mince words about the nastier sides of Douglas's nature either: Bosie was a snob, a raving anti-Semite, and like his unbalanced father, prone to destructive rages. One might well say, as James Agate did about Douglas's Autobiography, that his life story is "a record of some pretty good quarrelling." That's characteristic English understatement for you: Douglas seems to have spent much of his life in court, either suing or being sued for libel. Wilde's trial set a pattern Bosie seemed obliged to repeat until he himself was sent to jail after yet another libel charge (instigated by Winston Churchill, of all people) finally stuck. Wormwood Scrubs in the 1920s was no picnic, and Douglas emerged a humbled man; towards the end of his life, he even achieved a measure of reconciliation with his younger self. Murray skillfully conveys the pathos of these final years--like Wilde's, lonely and poverty-stricken, but unlike Wilde's, largely forgotten. This groundbreaking biography does much to correct that historical oversight, and in doing so, provides a fascinating account of one of poetry's most complex personalities. --Mary Park

First-time author Murray, who is only 23 and still an undergraduate at Oxford, is impressive in his mature assessment of Bosie's emotional instability and ruinous need for revenge, tracing much of it to the strain of insanity in the Douglas family. While his account of the infamous 1895 libel trial is mainly sourced from earlier books and records, Murray's access to the further details of Douglas's life through letters and journals in Britain and in the Berg collection here breaks new ground. Treated shamefully by Wilde after the playwright's release from prison, and then vilified by English society, Douglas developed a persecution mania that inspired many of his unhinged accusations. As Murray shows, at every point in his life Douglas made poor judgmentsAsabotaging his career as a poet and editor, resorting to libel and rushing to litigation in a clearly hostile court system, destroying a strange but loving marriage, losing his son and his social standingAand then even criminally libeling Winston Churchill. Eventually, Douglas was left penniless and alone. On the evidence Murray presents here, however, Douglas's small but eloquent poetical oeuvre should survive the sad scandal of his life. Out From The Shadows

Although the life of Oscar Wilde has been written about extensively, that of Lord Alfred Douglas has remained obscure until The appearance of Douglas Murray's biography. The book is a remarkable accomplishment for such a young man and the character of Lord Alfred Douglas, as unpleasant as it may be, is very absorbing. Murray describes the 45 years of Douglas'life after Wilde's death and illuminates the personality of a man who, until now, has been known chiefly as Wilde's lover and companion. Particular attention is paid to Douglas' poetry, which few people seemed to feel was worthy of much critical scutiny before.
It was particularly interesting to me to see Douglas' cantankerous and litigious (sp?) life turn into a parody of his father's similar behavior. This causes me to consider that perhaps the strain of insanity that ran through the Douglas family tree afflicted both father and son.
In any event, Lord Alfred had a largely unhappy life and died penniless - an embarassing condition for an English lord of high breeding. His stint in prison, while well deserved, apparently had a devastating effect on Douglas' health and outlook.
Ironically, I found myself growing more sympathetic towards Douglas toward the end of the book. He seems to have realized that most of his troubles in his later life were self-inflicted and that he had no one to blame but himself.
Altogether, this was a highly informative work which illuminates not only the life of Alfred Douglas but also the times in which he lived and the people with whom he associated.

A Bad Reputation Finally Redeemed

Douglas Murray has done what I had thought impossible - completely humanized Lord Alfred Douglas and made me forgive and love him.
Up til now I had regarded Bosie as a monster of selfishness and the nemesis of my idol Oscar Wilde. So great was my distaste for him that in my book collection I would not let his work rest on the same shelf as Wilde's.
But this tour de force of a biography, exquisitely researched and crafted without prejudice or partiality, has redeemed the most maligned personality of the Fin de Siecle. Lord Douglas is neither sinner nor saint but merely a man who was his father's son, a fine poet, and a partner in a tragic friendship.
This young author is one to watch. His talent is prodigious. I have been a Wilde fanatic for thirty years, and this book shook me. I read every word hungrily, and wept when I finished the final page. Bravo, Douglas Murray! Thank you for "Bosie".

A very moving & thought provoking book

Like many people I had a pre-formed opinion of Bosie from the various books written about Oscar Wilde, this biography has considerably altered my perception of Lord Alfred Douglas. He was a very complicated character and the book gives a balanced view on all aspects of his life as well as the many facets of Douglas's personality. It deals with the many untruths which surround his relationship with Wilde and includes extracts from Douglas's poetry. I had no idea how much of this there was nor how lovely, after reading sections of it reproduced in the book I now want to read more. By the time I put the book down I felt very moved by the whole tale of this mans life. I wholeheartedly recommend it.
