Book is in a foreign language so can't read it! Misleading!
By Patrice Van Hyle
What a shock and disappointment! This book arrived today in a foreign language, Armenian? I can't read it so have to see if I can return it. This is very misleading as the description said the book was translated in numerous languages, it didn't specify that the one I ordered wasn't translated! I guess now looking at it, it does say Armenian edition, I probably only glanced and thought it said American edition!

Bad Pharma: How Drug Companies Mislead Doctors and Harm Patients, by Ben Goldacre

"Smart, funny, clear, unflinching: Ben Goldacre is my hero." ―Mary Roach, author of Stiff, Spook, and Bonk

We like to imagine that medicine is based on evidence and the results of fair testing and clinical trials. In reality, those tests and trials are often profoundly flawed. We like to imagine that doctors who write prescriptions for everything from antidepressants to cancer drugs to heart medication are familiar with the research literature about these drugs, when in reality much of the research is hidden from them by drug companies. We like to imagine that doctors are impartially educated, when in reality much of their education is funded by the pharmaceutical industry. We like to imagine that regulators have some code of ethics and let only effective drugs onto the market, when in reality they approve useless drugs, with data on side effects casually withheld from doctors and patients.
All these problems have been shielded from public scrutiny because they are too complex to capture in a sound bite. Ben Goldacre shows that the true scale of this murderous disaster fully reveals itself only when the details are untangled. He believes we should all be able to understand precisely how data manipulation works and how research misconduct in the medical industry affects us on a global scale.
With Goldacre's characteristic flair and a forensic attention to detail, Bad Pharma reveals a shockingly broken system in need of regulation. This is the pharmaceutical industry as it has never been seen before.

From Booklist
In the follow-up to his popular Bad Science (2010), British medical doctor Goldacre reveals how pharmaceutical companies mislead doctors and hurt patients. They “sponsor” trials, which tend to yield favorable results, while negative results often remain unreported. He also reports that drug companies spend twice as much on marketing and advertising as on researching and developing new drugs. Unfortunately for U.S. readers, he focuses largely on the UK, but ghost authorship of studies and “continuing medical education” boondoggle trips for doctors are problematic everywhere, and he does refer to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on multiple occasions. And everyone, everywhere should feel unsettled by his discovery that pharmaceutical companies funnel $10 million to $20 million a year to such major medical journals as the New England Journal of Medicine and the Journal of the American Medical Association. Not surprisingly, he notes, studies funded by the pharmaceutical industry are that much more likely to get published in these influential journals. Goldacre’s essential exposé will prompt readers to ask more questions before automatically popping a doctor-prescribed pill. --Karen Springen

From Bookforum
Bad Pharma is surely the most comprehensive account to date of how the pharmaceutical industry games the regulatory process. Still, Bad Pharma is short on practical prescriptions for reform, and it is not until the last ten pages that Goldacre acknowledges that drug companies are manufacturing products that save lives and alleviate pain for billions of people. —Chris Wilson

Review

“Slightly technical, eminently readable, consistently shocking, occasionally hectoring and unapologetically polemical . . . This is a book that deserves to be widely read, because anyone who does read it cannot help feeling both uncomfortable and angry.” ―The Economist

“Ben Goldacre has done it again . . . This is a morbidly fascinating and dispiriting account, yet one which deserves (and needs) to be read and acted upon without delay.” ―Dennis Rosen, Dennis Rosen, The Boston Globe

“Read this book. It will make you mad, it will make you scared. And, hopefully, it will bring about some change. ” ―Chris Lee, Ars Technica

“A thorough piece of investigative medical journalism. What keeps you turning its pages is the accessibility of Goldacre's writing, . . . his genuine, indignant passion, his careful gathering of evidence and his use of stories, some of them personal, which bring the book to life.” ―Luisa Dillner, The Guardian

“Goldacre's research is scrupulous, and lay readers may find themselves converted by his geeky ardor. ” ―The New Yorker

“[A]n eye-opening glance into a world of experts who have failed us.” ―The New York Times Book Review

“In this searing exposé of the pharmaceutical industry, physician and journalist Goldacre uncovers a cesspool of corrupt practices designed to sell useless or dangerous drugs to an unsuspecting public . . . Goldacre conveys complicated scientific, medical, and ethical issues in simple, clear, plainspoken language that pulls no punches. The result is a smart, infuriating diagnosis of the rotten heart of the medical-industrial complex.” ―Publishers Weekly

“A useful guide for policymakers, doctors and the patients who need protection against deliberate disinformation.” ―Kirkus Reviews

“Goldacre's essential exposé will prompt readers to ask more questions before automatically popping a doctor-prescribed pill.” ―Karen Springen, Booklist

“Smart, funny, clear, unflinching: Ben Goldacre is my hero.” ―Mary Roach, author of Stiff, Spook, and Bonk, on Bad Science

“Ben Goldacre is exasperated . . . He is irked, vexed, bugged, ticked off at sometimes inadvertent (because of stupidity) but more often deliberate deceptions perpetrated in the name of science . . . You'll get a good grounding in the importance of evidence-based medicine . . . ‘Studies show' is not good enough, he writes: ‘The plural of "anecdote" is not data.'” ―Katherine Bouton, The New York Times, on Bad Science

“One of the best books I've ever read. It completely changed the way I saw the world. And I actually mean it. ” ―Tim Harford, author of The Undercover Economist, on Bad Science

“Ben Goldacre lucidly, and irreverently, debunks a frightening amount of pseudoscience, from cosmetics to dietary supplements to alternative medicine. If you want to read one book to become a better-informed consumer and citizen, read Bad Science.” ―Sandeep Jauhar, author of Intern, on Bad Science

“This is a much-needed book. Ben Goldacre shows us--with hysterical wit--how to separate the scam artists from real science. In a world of misinformation, this is a rare gem.” ―Timothy Ferriss, author of The 4-Hour Workweek, on Bad Science

“Ben Goldacre uses a brilliant mix of science and wit to challenge and investigate alternative therapists and the big pharmaceutical corporations. Bad Science is an invaluable tool for anybody who wants to protect themselves from the snake-oil salesmen of the twenty-first century.” ―Simon Singh, author of Big Bang and Fermat's Last Theorem, on Bad Science

“British physician and journalist Ben Goldacre takes aim at quack doctors, pharmaceutical companies and poorly designed studies in extraordinary fashion in Bad Science . . . Goldacre shines in a chapter about bad scientific studies by writing it from the perspective of a make-believe big pharma researcher who needs to bring a mediocre new drug to market. He explains exactly how to skew the data to show a positive result. 'I'm so good at this I scare myself,' he writes. 'Comes from reading too many rubbish trials.'” ―Rachel Saslow, The Washington Post, on Bad Science

“Funny and biting . . . While it is a very entertaining book, it also provides important insight into the horrifying outcomes that can result when willful anti-intellectualism is allowed equal footing with scientific methodology.” ―Dennis Rosen, The Boston Globe, on Bad Science

“I hereby make the heretical argument that it is time to stop cramming kids' heads with the Krebs cycle, Ohm's law, and the myriad other facts that constitute today's science curricula. Instead, what we need to teach is the ability to detect Bad Science--BS, if you will. The reason we do science in the first place is so that 'our own atomized experiences and prejudices' don't mislead us, as Ben Goldacre of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine puts it in his new book, Bad Science: Quacks, Hacks, and Big Pharma Flacks. Understanding what counts as evidence should therefore trump memorizing the structural formulas for alkanes.” ―Sharon Begley, Newsweek.com, on Bad Science

“Dr. Ben Goldacre's UK bestseller Bad Science: Quacks, Hacks, and Big Pharma Flacks is finally in print in the USA, and Americans are lucky to have it. Goldacre writes a terrific Guardian column analyzing (and debunking) popular science reporting, and has been a star in the effort to set the record straight on woowoo 'nutritionists,' doctors who claim that AIDS can be cured with vitamns, and vaccination/autism scares. Bad Science is more than just a debunking expose (though it's that): it's a toolkit for critical thinking, a primer on statistics and valid study design, a guide to meta-analysis and other tools for uncovering and understanding truth . . . The book should be required reading for everyone who cares about health, science, and public policy.” ―BoingBoing.net on Bad Science

Another killer blow from the pen of Dr. Goldacre
By Guy Chapman
It is a common claim among alt med cranks that skeptics are only critical of alternative medicine. This is not and has never been true - most of Bad Science is about "Big Pharma" and its shenanigans, but this latest book by Ben Goldacre goes a lot further.

In "Bad Pharma" you will read about the ways in which vested interests bamboozle us and our doctors, whether by accident or design. You will find out why the benefits of most medicines are overstated, and why the systematic review is incredibly important. You will become, in short order, very angry indeed, and then you will be told what you can do about that anger - whether you are a patient or a doctor.

Goldacre's style is engaging and informal, and he is a practising doctor. The books include anecdotes about how he himself has unknowingly prescribed drugs which are not just ineffective, but worse than doing nothing - despite having read the research evidence with a particularly critical eye. All the data and references are there if you need them but they don't derail the narrative, so the book functions both as a reference and as an eminently readable story.

This is my pick for best book of the year so far, and one of the most important books most of us will have read. This is about your health. Get informed, get angry and get active!

The Upton Sinclair of Pharma....
By OSS architect
Dr Goldacre is an Epidemiologist, as am I. Or was. I changed fields because I saw examples, first hand, of what Dr Goldacre exposes in his book. Proper clinical trials are very difficult and expensive to do. You get obvious bad data in the raw observations, sample sizes are less than you want. Your power calculation on the sample size you have and the results you got suggest your P-value is bogus. You have to make judgements in some very grey areas. Every day.

You work with research MDs that won't have a career if they don't get results. As an Epidemiologist you work part time on numerous small grants that don't add up to an adequate salary, so many of us do (did) statistical work for drug company trials. You don't get recommended for further consulting work if you are "overly rigorous", shall we say.

In the late 70's new FDA requirements caused everyone to step up their game, but at increasing expense to doing trials. To contains costs, 30 years later, trials are now outsourced to about a half dozen separate specialist companies each doing one part of the study. A Clinical program management company, a data staging company, various companies that do the raw analysis (e.g. reading of CAT, MRI data), a company that prepares the results according to FDA submission requirements. All of them competing for the next contract, and competing on cost.

You can see where this is going....

I never witnessed any truly unethical behavior. There is no evil here. Personally, I chose to go into the software industry to avoid having to make daily ethical decisions. Dr. Goldacre wrote the book that many Epidemiologists could write. Hats off to him for actually doing it.

This ex-Epidemiologist only takes generic drugs, because the only good clinical trial is done on the general public, and after it comes off-patent, it's been around long enough to know it's efficacy and side effects.

A tough reality check on drug companies and legislation
By Martin Orsted
Bad Pharma highlights serious issues with the way the pharmaceutical industry works today. In the book Ben highlights the problems with the industry from several angles, how the tests can be tweaked, how negative tests are not published, how you can make a neutral test appear positive by sub-dividing the goals and then emphasize the fluke positive one. He also shows how the medical journals are part of the problem and the issue with ghost written articles. He shows the problems with the regulatory side as well, for example the European Medicines Agency, their lack of transparency, and how they have effectively blocked access to critical data for researchers. All through the book Ben makes use of well documented examples, and all the issues highlighted are well documented and exemplified.

The book is written in an easy to access language, and so it reads well. He does repeat himself a bit, so one more round of editing and cleanup before release would probably have been a good idea. Some readers on amazon.co.uk have criticised this, but I don't see it as an issue.

You don't need to have a degree in medicine or a higher degree in general to understand the issues Ben highlights.

Ben Goldacre runs the Bad Science website (badscience dot net) and has previously written the book Bad Science. Where Bad Science was an attack on quackery and pseudo science, and his website to a large degree has dealt with the same topics, this book is a critical look at the pharmaceutical industry. As such it ought to silence those that have attacked Ben Goldacre for being in the pockets of the Pharmaceutical industry over time.

Ben Goldacre has done society a big favour by writing this book. I definitely recommend reading it if you want to understand more about how US and European health care works and what can be done to improve it in the future.

Lacking in some important fundamentals
By Charles Schamenek
I've used Paint Shop Pro 8 for only a couple of months before I bought this book. I was seldom interested in using it for advanced stuff - commonly called "bells and whistles". I was only using it for simple stuff. I just wanted to know why some so-called "tools" and stuff "disappear" just when I need them, especially the Font selection and font size tool when I want to insert plain text. Two short paragraphs on page 315 do not help. And other paragraphs which mention how to use the "View" options to select various tools, palettes and such did not help either; I already knew about those. And "starting from scratch", so to speak, and following the detailed instructions on adding text, did not help either. What a waste of my money, not to mention the added aggravation.

Easy read--very helpful
By Kathi Greyhosky
I like the way this book is written. Often the writers of manuals write as if you already understand the subject to begin with. You might know what all the words mean, but put them together and it's like Greek to me. But this book makes it understandable and sometimes even amusing. Good job.

I haven't finished reading it, I'm enjoying it so much I want to savor it...informative and funny at times. He was an eclectic writer with the skills to pull it off with aplomb. When I'm done, I may end up giving it five stars.

Principles of Linear Algebra with Mathematica, by Kenneth M. Shiskowski, Karl Frinkle

A hands-on introduction to the theoretical and computational aspects of linear algebra using Mathematica®

Many topics in linear algebra are simple, yet computationally intensive, and computer algebra systems such as Mathematica® are essential not only for learning to apply the concepts to computationally challenging problems, but also for visualizing many of the geometric aspects within this field of study. Principles of Linear Algebra with Mathematica uniquely bridges the gap between beginning linear algebra and computational linear algebra that is often encountered in applied settings, and the commands required to solve complex and computationally challenging problems using Mathematica are provided.

The book begins with an introduction to the commands and programming guidelines for working with Mathematica. Next, the authors explore linear systems of equations and matrices, applications of linear systems and matrices, determinants, inverses, and Cramer's rule. Basic linear algebra topics, such as vectors, dot product, cross product, and vector projection are explored, as well as a unique variety of more advanced topics including rotations in space, 'rolling' a circle along a curve, and the TNB Frame. Subsequent chapters feature coverage of linear transformations from Rn to Rm, the geometry of linear and affine transformations, with an exploration of their effect on arclength, area, and volume, least squares fits, and pseudoinverses.

Mathematica is used to enhance concepts and is seamlessly integrated throughout the book through symbolic manipulations, numerical computations, graphics in two and three dimensions, animations, and programming. Each section concludes with standard problems in addition to problems that were specifically designed to be solved with Mathematica, allowing readers to test their comprehension of the presented material. All related Mathematica code is available on a corresponding website, along with solutions to problems and additional topical resources.

Extensively class-tested to ensure an accessible presentation, Principles of Linear Algebra with Mathematica is an excellent book for courses on linear algebra at the undergraduate level. The book is also an ideal reference for students and professionals who would like to gain a further understanding of the use of Mathematica to solve linear algebra problems.

Undergrad indie student likes this book so far
By Amilein Zenomans
I'm finishing Chapter 5, and here is some of what I like about this book (in no particular order of presentation).

1. Written about as clearly as popular texts such as Howard Anton's Elementary...
2. Good balance of theory/proof and calculation.
3. Introductory chapter on Mathematica is good.
4. For students new to Mathematica, downloadable code is available at the book's website. Code is written such that it appears to run on MMA 6, 7, and 8.
5. Authors respect the past, but are not stuck in it. They clearly understand that computer algebra systems need not rot a student's brain.
6. The proof of many important linear algebra relationships presented in the text are left as exercises for the student (in the homework sections of the text). This helps the motivated student develop independence so important to maths.
7. Solutions manual (comes with book) is no lazy thing. As necessary, steps are clearly shown and good explanations given.

I have the impression that Shiskowski and Frinkle are unpretentious fellows, at least as interested in teaching as in pleasing those maths instructors who still won't embrace CAS's (at least when others are looking). Quite clearly, S and F value and enjoy theorems and proof; just as clearly, they value and enjoy the integration of modern CAS's into the teaching process. This is a huge plus in my opinion because is saves a great deal of study/practice time, expands what can be covered in a course, and allows students to be exposed to more realistic problems - not just problems so simplified that they are manageable with paper, pencil, and hand calculator. Also, CAS's like Mathematica and Maple make possible study of some of the informative (and I think beautiful) geometric bases, interpretations, and applications of linear algebra.

This book is in its first, but I hope not last, edition. As such, it doesn't give one all the colorful formatting and non-substantive content commonly found in more established works. But who cares about this besides greedy publishers and poor students? The absence of fluff in this book keeps the price relatively low. Compare others at $120 for text plus $35 for solutions manual and about $40 more for a CAS manual (that is likely not really integrated into the text, but more like slapped onto the end of it).

Highly recommended for the ambitious EE student
By AMNorse
I am an electrical engineering student in the northern US, but my university has very separate math and engineering departments. The linear algebra class at my school does not focus on applications or technology at all, so I decided to teach myself and took a gamble on this book.

I've read many math texts and found that the common theme among those that teach well is a conversational style of language combined with many examples, problem sets, and solutions. This book is written in an enjoyable and accessible manner that does not attempt to cut words so that it can have the appearance of added rigor. It has plenty of rigor all on it's own, and the material is that much more accessible because the author is willing to talk the reader through things. The integration of Mathematica is equally enjoyable and will no doubt provide me with a tool that is very handy for solving problems that would be tedious or nearly impossible to do by hand.

The problems at the end of the sections are on point for the preceding lesson. They are separated into problems meant to be done by hand and those meant for Mathematica. Many of the Mathematica problems are tailored to serve as a teaching tool to show someone why they would want (or need) a computer algebra system. This could have been something that got in the way of learning the math, but it isn't overbearing and adds to the text.

My only critique is that this is not the right book for people who do not want to learn a computer algebra system. Obviously, as that's ~30% of what the book is teaching. It's right in the title. But then why wouldn't someone be interested? Mathematicians and engineers need a computer algebra system to speed up their workflow, and this book helps you kill two birds with one stone.

Also of note is the companion website which contains Mathematica code for problems and examples, as well as a comprehensive solutions manual. Problems are thoroughly worked out and explained which is utterly critical and something I wish more texts put emphasis on.

I have not finished the book and will update when I do, but I honestly couldn't wait to review this text. This is a real treat after a year of some very inaccessible math texts.

TLDR: Overall, very impressive! If you want to learn Mathematica and linear algebra, especially if you are teaching yourself, this is the way to do it!

Satellites in the High Country: Searching for the Wild in the Age of Man, by Jason Mark

In New Mexico's Gila Wilderness, 106 Mexican gray wolves may be some of the most monitored wildlife on the planet. Collared, microchipped, and transported by helicopter, the wolves are protected and confined in an attempt to appease ranchers and conservationists alike. Once a symbol of the wild, these wolves have come to illustrate the demise of wilderness in this Human Age, where man's efforts shape life in even the most remote corners of the earth. And yet, the howl of an unregistered wolf—half of a rogue pair—splits the night. If you know where to look, you'll find that much remains untamed, and even today, wildness can remain a touchstone for our relationship with the rest of nature.

In Satellites in the High Country, journalist and adventurer Jason Mark travels beyond the bright lights and certainties of our cities to seek wildness wherever it survives. In California's Point Reyes National Seashore, a battle over oyster farming and designated wilderness pits former allies against one another, as locals wonder whether wilderness should be untouched, farmed, or something in between. In Washington's Cascade Mountains, a modern-day wild woman and her students learn to tan hides and start fires without matches, attempting to connect with a primal past out of reach for the rest of society. And in Colorado's High Country, dark skies and clear air reveal a breathtaking expanse of stars, flawed only by the arc of a satellite passing—beauty interrupted by the traffic of a million conversations. These expeditions to the edges of civilization's grid show us that, although our notions of pristine nature may be shattering, the mystery of the wild still exists — and in fact, it is more crucial than ever.

But wildness is wily as a coyote: you have to be willing to track it to understand the least thing about it. Satellites in the High Country is an epic journey on the trail of the wild, a poetic and incisive exploration of its meaning and enduring power in our Human Age.

Review
"One of the pleasures of Satellites in the High Country is that Mr. Mark does not follow the usual nature writer’s path and just throw the word “wild” out there, waving it like a flag, before carrying on with his own happy tramps into the wilderness. His approach to decoding the word is comprehensive, ...The ideas are the best part...trips are well-described and linked clearly to the book’s intellectual lessons." (Wall Street Journal)

"Fascinating" (Mother Jones)

"In his new book, Satellites In The High Country: Searching For The Wild In The Age Of Man, Mark takes us on a journey across America in search of wilderness, from a reservation in South Dakota where the reintroduction of bison has divided the community to a cave in Washington state where a British cavewoman is replicating life in the  Paleolithic more than two million years ago. Along the way, he explores the meaning of wilderness and the urgent need to conserve what remains of it." (National Geographic)

"This is true adventure; Mark writes eloquently about our need for nature and our responsibility to preserve it." (Contra Costa Times)

"[This] book... had me reanalyzing...every opinion I hold about what nature is, what wilderness is and what we can, can't, should and shouldn't do to our planet...The book is a conversation. Readers sit down and listen as a friend narrates adventures and ideas, and there's plenty of room to pick up threads of ideas brought up in the book and run with them on your own. Even as you turn the final pages, the book feels like the beginning of a long and very necessary discussion." (Mother Nature Network)

"Mark carves out a fine distinction between inadvertent influence caused by factors like climate change and intentional control. He offers a heartfelt ode to the continued importance of nonintervention in wilderness areas, even if doing so leads to unrecognizably changed landscapes."
(High Country News)

"Throughout, Mark neatly blends the particular place details with broad maxims of wilderness philosophy, slanted toward the needs of earth’s future, and expressed with an eloquent originality. What’s more he does it with some charming descriptive passages."
(Sierra Club's Words of the Wild)

"Mark journeys through wilderness that most of his readers will never see, and in doing so demonstrates why in just knowing there is wild, somewhere, we can remain grounded in our existence on the planet….If Mark romanticizes the refuge found in the wild, he makes no apologies for it. Satellites in the High Country is an evocative meditation on reconnecting our bond to the natural world, and why it is so important. But Mark’s is more than a romantic vision. It is also a pragmatic understanding that, to save ourselves, we’ll need to reconcile our fractured relationship to the wild in the Age of Man." (Triple Pundit)

"Through it all, [Mark] does a nice job of balancing historical fact and sociopolitical commentary with poetic passages that celebrate the breathtaking beauty of the natural world."
(KQED Arts The Spine)

"Satellites in the High Country is an act of ground truthing on the nature of wildness at this moment in time. Author Jason Mark circumnavigates the American West with the eyes of an open-hearted sleuth, looking for what wild remains. Wildness, he discovers, is not only all around us, but inside us as well, having little to do with what is pristine or untouched and everything to do with nature’s intricate system of adaptation and response, function and beauty, and our innate capacity for awe. This book is a conversation with sanity." (Terry Tempest Williams author of When Women Were Birds)

"Jason Mark is a great person to share an adventure with, whether out on the Arctic tundra or on the page. Satellites in the High Country is an engrossing exploration of the ever-evolving definition of what is 'wild' in America—which often reveals as much about us as it does about wilderness in the twenty-first century." (Michael Brune Executive Director, Sierra Club)

"Satellites in the High Country is a brave and vigorous exploration of wilderness—its meaning, its necessity, its thunderous, rock-strewn reality. Jason Mark guides the reader across mountain passes and Arctic tussocks on a journey that is at once physical, philosophical, and political. His feet may be bruised, but his voice is strong, honest, and compelling. Read this book for an insightful and much-needed update on the centrality of wilderness in the contemporary American mind." (Kathleen Dean Moore author of Great Tide Rising)

"Jason Mark revisits 'the wild' in our landscapes and in our minds. At a time when the wild—as a place and an idea—is being increasingly hemmed in, he offers fresh insights, unsettled questions, and renewed appreciation." (Curt Meine Aldo Leopold Foundation & Center for Humans and Nature)

"In Satellites in the High Country, gripping accounts of outdoor journeys are linked with provocative thinking about the meaning of wildness in an increasingly human-controlled world. Jason Mark ably continues the writing style and themes of legends such as John Muir and Edward Abbey." (Roderick Frazier Nash author of Wilderness and the American Mind)

"In Satellites in the High Country, Mark narrates his adventures in America’s wilderness with stunning detail. The dilemma of whether to leave nature to its own devices or tend it in order to preserve its ecological integrity is sensitively portrayed. Now more than ever, we need voices like Mark’s to illustrate this ever-complex relationship between mankind and nature, and to inspire us to care for our wild places." (Jamie Williams President of The Wilderness Society)

"Mark gives an invitation to flee modernity and embrace mysterious nature as he shares the poetic insights he found in the wild." (Foreword)

“In this compellingly readable account of his quest to explore some of the planet’s last remaining stretches of authentic wilderness, environmental writer Mark argues that safeguarding a powerful sense of 'the Wild' as separate from civilization is more critical than ever….Mark presents a fresh, first-rate piece of nature writing and a stirring manifesto calling for the protection and celebration of the true spirit of wild places.”

The Wild as Evolution's Canvass
By Bjorn Beer
Jason Mark’s new book belongs in the collection of anyone who cares about the environment or enjoys the wilderness, but whose language can’t seem keep up with the accelerating changes around us.

Today, we find ourselves in a near apocalyptic tautology: at what point of environmental degradation does wilderness become so tampered with by human activity and pollution that it ceases to be wild? At what point does wilderness stop being wild if – ironically – we are trying to intervene to save our current conception of wilderness? Mark helps the reader find her own way out of a wilderness of language that surrounds our concept of the wild. Yet, his style is more like the hands-off backcountry trip leader who says "time out everyone, take out your map and compass and figure out where we are and where we’re going."

In other words, I didn’t feel like Mark was forcing “The Answer” upon the reader, but rather was guiding the reader to think about the question of wilderness – and wildness – in a new (or maybe old) way. While so much environmental literature today is written with the heart of an insurance actuary or an economist at a corporate-sponsored think tank, Mark is obviously someone who enjoys the wilderness through his heart, and on his own two feet. He captures the numinous, the ineffable. He writes as someone who has been humbled by nature, and who would be a solid backpacking companion.

The narrative forces the reader to re-evaluate their idea of what constitutes wilderness. By the end of the book, Mark reveals his thoughts on wilderness in a more direct way: “A “post- wild” world would put human civilization into a kind of solitary confinement. There would be no Away, no frontier or edge to civilization. There would be no Other, nothing to contest our will. We would be left all alone.” Perhaps freeing the wild makes us free.

I do get the sense, however, that many who read the book who don’t already have the appreciation and deep emotional connection to the wild might not really “get it.” Mark captures this frustration when, for example, he laments that fewer younger people and minorities are in the wilderness. So on one hand, I was inspired by the awe, appreciation, and humility that can only come from spending a lot of time communing with the wild. On the other, I feel despair that without time in the wild, how do you value it fully, broadly, and deeply? Should we then be surprised that we increasingly base our decisions on conservation and environmental policy on utilitarian calculations?

I think Mark’s contribution to the literature here is to underscore that wilderness is a canvass where evolution can play out. “Wildness preserves evolution,” he writes. “The daily audacity of creation unfolding, keeps open the possibility of new forms of life.” Here, we are almost encouraged to “hug the beast” and embrace accelerating changes on the precipice of the Anthropocene. The Anthropocene is happening, so let’s make sure we preserve as much landscape that is free for evolution to do its thing.

There is a real tangible benefit to the human species for preserving landscapes for evolution to play out. Yet, Mark transcends the practical and really does capture the value of wilderness for its own sake. Here he puts the value of wilderness in a higher orbit that might just escape the gravity of our crass utilitarian calculations, our egos, and our desire for control. Perhaps it’s not just the satellite orbiting out there.

Are there still any wild places left on our planet?
By Brian Smith
Are there still any wild places left on our planet?

That is the main question Jason Mark tackles in Satellites in the High Country: Searching for the Wild in the Age of Man.

In a era of global GPS, ocean acidification, climate change and market globalization it's hard to imagine anywhere that hasn't been impacted by humanity. Thus the declaration of our era as The Anthropocene, the era when man began to change global ecosystems on a planetary-wide scale.

Going out to search for "Wilderness" in such an era is quite a task. Jason Mark takes us on a number of adventures "outside the anthill" of civilization, mostly in the American West and Arctic. Along the way he brings some of today's greatest thinkers on this subject and asks them (usually around a campfire) what they think about this question.

What we discover is that wilderness is no longer strictly defined as "untouched." What matters today is that there are still places "uncontrolled" by humanity. Places where animals and forces of nature have the power to put you squarely back on the food chain. Places where paying attention and "mindfulness" are required simply to stay alive. Places where we can come into direct dialogue with all that is.

Wild places deserve our protection because they have a right to exist outside of our control, and we need wild place to visit so we can get be beyond the reach of human civilization.

"Satellites in the High Country" continues the conversation started by Henry David Thoreau, John Muir, Rachel Carson, John McPhee, and Annie Dillard about our place in the world, and our duty to protect all that is not human civilization. I was thrilled to see a Generation X journalist take up this conversation and push it forward. In the era of cyber-everything, this book could not have arrived at a better moment.

By Kevin F
Jason Mark has hit it out of the park with this one. Satellites in the High Country is thoughtful and thought provoking, exciting, lucid, and literate. On the surface, Mark's book offers a series of engaging narratives, each of which will resonate with anyone who has ever found solace or adventure in wild places. Woven throughout these stories, and tying them together into a greater whole, is a thoughtful inquiry into the concept and role of wilderness in the age of humanity. This is an important book, and I look forward to seeing more from Jason Mark in the future.

Good overall, tax chapter is particularly useful
By WestCoastBestCoast
This book has good coverage of oil and gas exploration for a broad audience, but could stand to have a few more illustrations and tables to explain some of the concepts. It's got a pretty thorough step-by-step explanation of the process from exploration to drilling to (hopeful) profit. Who knows what black gold lurks under yonder plains; this book can help you find out. It's a reasonably quick read and pretty dense.

The book's coverage of the AMT (Alternative Minimum Tax) is particularly useful; for many energy investors the AMT is becoming more and more important. I haven't seen any other books of this type that so thoroughly cover the impact of the AMT. Did you know that the AMT can result in double-taxation? This book explains how to structure your investment so that if you make more than $100,000 (which hopefully you will) you'll be able to minimize the risk of getting hit with a huge AMT bill.

Hopefully the next edition will fix the problem with the charts; it's hard to follow some of the tax examples without having a table or a chart or something.

small book; very good
By ilukens
This is a small book -- only 75 page with notes, but it is very well written and tersely but competently explains the essentials of the subject. It is very readable and pitched just right--- it is intelligent and does not oversimplify but avoids being technical, too detailed or too dry. The chapters are: 1) exploration and production basics parts 1 & 2; 2) Tax advantages to the Ol & Gas investor; 3) Deal Structures; and 4) applying financial concepts. In its small size the book succeeds in painting a comprehensive overview of the subject-- it explains the mechanics of the drilling enterprise, the roles of various parties (including the landowner, operator and various active or passive investor and business partners), decision points in the drilling enterprise and allocations of expenses and profits. An excellent and intelligent introduction to the subject.

Investing in Oil and Gas Wells - Great for broker training
By Josephine A. Race
This book has been helpful for training new brokers in the oil and gas industry. The FINRA licensing tests are fine for the regs, but this puts it in investor-friendly form.
