Satisfying conclusion to a good trilogy

Vampires and werewolves are so last year. Nowadays, angels and demons appear to have dominated YA bookshelves, from Laini Taylor's "Daughter of Smoke and Bone" to Susan Ee's "Penryn and the End of Days" series. One of the most thrilling paranormal series I've read in a while is L.A. Weatherly's "Angel" trilogy, which is chock full of romance, action and excitement--what more could you ask for? "Angel Fever" is the climactic finale to the series, whisking us away for one last angel-butt-kicking adventure.

Things don't seem good for the Angel Killers. Millions of people live in Edens, "refugee" camps set up by the angels who use them as feeding grounds. Raziel is more powerful than ever, tightening his hold on angels and humans alike. Yet in the face of these hellish odds, Willow and Alex aren't giving up, recruiting and training new Angel Killers for the perfect moment to strike the angels and rid humanity of the parasitic creatures forever. But when a game-changing revelation sends Alex on a separate journey, one that leaves Willow bereft and confused, each of them must face the consequences of their own choices. With the end of the celestial battle drawing near, the stakes are higher than ever--but will love and humanity survive?

Clearly one of the most important things an author must do when writing the final book of a series is wrap things up, tie loose ends and leave nothing dangling--yet, at the same time, keep things fresh and exciting, so it's not all about checking off the things that had been built up in the previous books. I think Ms. Weatherly does a great job with this in the storyline of "Angel Fever," giving her readers a satisfying conclusion to the trilogy while maintaining the excitement until the very end. She does this by introducing new challenges and revelations for Alex and Willow, allowing for the developments of both the plot and the characters. I especially loved seeing more of Willow's mom, since she'd kind of been a rather quite character in the first two books. That being said, however, I do think that the middle parts of the novel were a little too static in terms of the storyline, but luckily not enough to make me lose interest completely and yawn and stuff my Kindle under the covers. Another thing that strikes me in retrospect was that the storyline was a tad bit predictable. I mean, it's quite obvious that Alex won't die--it was just a matter of when he was going to pop back up. Another example is how Willow saved the world (again, this much is obvious). Okay, maybe it wasn't predictable, but it wasn't as dramatic as it could be. Other than that, though, a definitely satisfying conclusion!

Moving on to the characters in "Angel Fever." Let's start off with Willow. As the heroine of the novel, I think Willow's a pretty good protagonist in that she's not the whiny, annoying type. Instead, she takes matters into her own hands, and, on a more personal level, finally completely accepts her identity as a half-angel. What's more, I found that I kind of respected Willow in the novel. Even when she's dealing with confusion and heartbreak in the aftermath of Alex's supposed death, Willow remains honest with herself for the most part, and I found myself going "you go girl" with the way she handled Alex's reappearance. As for Alex, I had pretty conflicting feelings for him. Sure, his love for Willow is clear and sweet without being overly cloying, but he was kind of a coward, breaking a pretty important promise to Willow, which made me question just how much he trusted her as an equal in their relationship. But I suppose the plot wouldn't have been as exciting or emotionally driven if it hadn't been for his jerk move. So I guess you're off the hook, Alex.

The rest of the characters were fairly great as well. Seb is a pretty likable guy, and his unrequited love for Willow makes him a sympathetic character. I'm glad Ms. Weatherly gave him a happy ending though, because, I mean, it's about time! Raziel, in my opinion, was just an okay bad guy. Yeah, he's undeniably evil and cruel and all that, but I felt like he was just that--evil and cruel. Nothing more. He does seem to show some kind of longing or nostalgia for Miranda, Willow's mom, but not enough to make him become one of those bad guys you sort of empathize with. All I'm saying is that he could've been a much more interesting antagonist had be had more dimension to him. Speaking of Miranda, I really found her character interesting to read about, as I'd said before, since she'd been a side character for the first two books. I just wish we had seen more of her, maybe through more interaction with Willow.

All in all, Ms. Weatherly fulfills her readers' expectations for a good conclusion to her "Angel" trilogy, giving us an exciting storyline and dynamic protagonists. I'd recommend this series for anyone looking for a fun, celestial read--it's worth it!

Good ending

This series will never be considered classic literature, but the characters are interesting. The Kindle version has far fewer errors than some other books I've read. Everything isn't tied up in a nice neat bow at the end, but main conflicts are resolved and there is a feeling of hope. I liked that. It made the story seem more realistic. My only complaint is the same as it is with many YA novels. It is ridiculous that the main characters meet, fall in "love," and stay together hypothetically forever when they are meeting at such a young age. I find that harder to swallow than the idea of creepy angels attacking humankind.

This bookseries is one of the best series i've read. This book is the last of the series and i still love it because it keeps on suprising, is funny, sad and exciting. The way the story is told from different perspectives is what i absolutely love the most of this series. The bonds between the 3 main characters is also beautifully described.

As a chiropractor that treats Auto, Work and Sports Injuries...I find myself referencing this book among others for common injuries in sport-specific scenarios. I think of it as my orthopedic sports injuries encyclopedia. I think this belongs on the shelf of trainers, physiatrists, manual therapy workers, occupational as well as physical therapists/chiropractors. The topic of lattice quantum spin systems is a fascinating and by now well-established branch of theoretical physics. However, many important questions remain to be answered. Their intrinsically quantum mechanical nature and the large (usually effectively infinite) number of spins in macroscopic materials often leads to unexpected or counter-intuitive results and insights. Spin systems are not only the basic models for a whole host of magnetic materials but they are also important as prototypical models of quantum systems. Low dimensional systems (as treated in this primer), in 2D and especially 1D, have been particularly fruitful because their simplicity has enabled exact solutions to be determined in many cases. These exact solutions contain many highly nontrivial features. This book was inspired by a set of lectures on quantum spin systems and it is set at a level of practical detail that is missing in other textbooks in the area. It will guide the reader through the foundations of the field. In particular, the solutions of the Heisenberg and XY models at zero temperature using the Bethe Ansatz and the Jordan-Wigner transformation are covered in some detail. The use of approximate methods, both theoretical and numerical, to tackle more advanced topics is considered. The final chapter describes some very recent applications of approximate methods in order to show some of the directions in which the study of these systems is currently developing.

Excellent, self-contained, concise intro quantum spin-chains

An excellent and entirely self-contained introduction to the basis of quantum spin chains. It is a short and clear account and in my opinion is the best place to start. There are some minor typos (very few) but shouldn't come on your way and can easily be spotted. I would have hoped to see some discussions of entanglement. Nevertheless for those who like to be able to access the literature on spin chains and get to that point fast, it is a wonderful read.

About the Author
After gaining his PhD in physical chemistry from Basel University, Switzerland, Rolf Hilfiker did his postdoc at Stony Brook, USA. He returned to Basel as a research fellow, initially at the university and then at Ciba-Geigy. In 1997 he became head of Stability & Kinetics group at Novartis, joining Solvias two years later where he is currently head of the department Solid-State Development. Dr. Hilfiker has taught physical chemistry in New York and Basel, and is a recipient of the Jacottet-K?ng Award and a Treubel Fellowship.
He is author of more than 50 scientific publications in various areas of physical chemistry.

Very useful text

The chapters on Thermodynamics of Polymorphs, Characterization Using Thermal Analysis, Solvates, Characterization of Hygroscopicity, Polymorphism and Patents, and the final chapter on Considerations in Regulatory Applications were immediately useful in my application. The material is written at a very useful level, so that understanding is developed rather than a compilation of equations or examples. The chapters on Polymorphism Screening and Salt Selection also appear useful to the scientist needing to deepen their understanding of these topics. Overall a very useful book to the practicing pharmaceutical scientist.

Michael Barnes's book, The Enduring Quest for Meaning, is the best book I have ever found for teaching courses on religion--written clearly and intelligibly, not assuming too much knowledge on the part of its readers, most of whom are college freshmen. It introduces the academic study of religion in a fascinating, well-organized, systematic way that relates its topic to the lives of students. The book carefully distinguishes the humanistic study of religion--which this book represents--from the believer's theological study without devaluing the latter.




This volume includes footnotes to relevant academic sources and key chapters that make the book's story clear. The final chapter's treatment of postmodernism is helpful to the understanding of religion in the twenty-first century.

Michael Horace Barnes's recent book, The Enduring Quest for Meaning, is a comprehensive and well-constructed introduction to religion as human response to mystery. It emphasizes the human heart's longing for God while summarizing the history of human religiousness: the evolution of religions from primitive to modern and all the dimensions of established and unestablished religions. The book talks about a God that transcends the limits of particular religions' titles or manner of relating to God or God's existence. The essential point in all courses in religion is the reality of human consciousness and its need to think beyond the visible and act in accordance with this conviction.

Outstanding! This book strikes the perfect balance between critical scholarship and respect for faith. I can't recommend it enough. I use the text for my popular course entitled Religion and Culture, and my students respond very positively to it, even with great enthusiasm.
