A Must Read For Anyone New to the Hobby of R/C Flying!

Although I am a retired airline pilot with a degree in aeronautical engineering and over 15,200 hours of jet piloting time, as a recent convert to the world of R/C model flying, I had endless questions. This book answered them in a concise, clear way! I have spent an enormous time calling support lines of R/C model dealers, searching about R/C forums, posting questions there, and watching hours of YouTube videos in my quest for knowledge. I could have saved myself a lot of time had I known of the existence of this great book.

I must also reveal that the book arrived yesterday afternoon and I am only half way through reading it. I have gleaned enough knowledge in that half book to justify my 5 star review. Bottom line: The book is a must read for anyone new to the hobby of flying R/C aircraft! Now I've got to run and go finish the rest of this great book!

Worthwhile, helpful, and enjoyable read

I am an experienced modeler and electric airplane pilot looking for material to help others learn about electric aircraft and flying. I read this book from cover-to-cover and found it to be thoughtful, well organized, and authoritative.

Jim engages the reader with some common initial questions that are clearly answered. The book helps with getting started with electric flight, safe modeling, field operations, how models work, and tools needed, as well as examining electric power systems.

The book is easy to read and understand, concise, and is up-to-date, and offers current useful electric information. I recommend it as an excellent guide to those starting out and needing a book to help "pull it all together".

About the Author
Xavier Calmet is a faculty member of the Theoretical Particle Physics Group at the University of Sussex. He leads the working group on Quantum Black Holes that is part of the COST action: "Black Holes in a Violent Universe". About the Author
Michael Oates of late was a professor of French at the University of Northern Iowa from 1967 to 2003. He received his Ph.D. in French from Georgetown University and was certified as an ACTFL Oral Proficiency Tester in French. In 1989, he won the ACTFL Nelson Brooks Award for Excellence in the Teaching of Culture. He is a Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Palmes Academiques.

Larbi Oukada, a native of Casablanca, Morocco, is the chair of the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures at Georgia College. Professor Oukada received a Ph.D. in linguistics from Louisiana State University. His research and publications have focused on French phonology, methods of teaching second languages, and the notion of curricular responsiveness. Professor Oukada coauthored with the late Mike Oates of Iowa a first-year French program entitled ENTRE AMIS, now in its sixth edition and adopted by over 350 colleges and universities. He is also the lead author of CONTROVERSES, now in its third edition.

About the Author
Conrad Carlberg started writing about Excel, and its use in quantitative analysis, before workbooks had worksheets. As a graduate student, he had the great good fortune to learn something about statistics from the wonderfully gifted Gene Glass. He remembers much of that and has learned more since. This is a book he has wanted to write for years, and he is grateful for the opportunity.

A Practical Use of Statistics for people without a lot (or any) statistical background

This is a pretty good book. As I am still working my way through it I can't speak for the later chapters more than my skimming them to see what they contained.
I will try to detail out what this book is and how it handles itself (which is in essence why I characterize it as a "good" book).

Firstly, this is not a reference book.

There is an index that seems quite detailed so if you want to reference something you can. However what I mean by it not being a reference book is that you cannot ask yourself, "How do I do such and such in Excel?" and then go look up the answer within a minute. So that is sort of a negative, but really, in the end it is not because the book is much more than that.

This book goes into great detail to explain statistics.
Simply reading the introduction really breaks you in to where the author is coming from and how he approaches the book.

He assumes you know NOTHING about statistics.

Think of him like a teacher, but one you are sitting down and having coffee with. He simply explains to you statistics in steps, and allows you to absorb it. Sometimes you absorb faster than others, sometimes he needs to repeat himself (basically meaning you go back and re-read the last page to make sure you understand). Each explanation comes with an example that is simple and made up (because it is an illustrative example) but seems plausible and lets you understand how and why this could be used.
Remember that scene from Peggy Sue Got Married? She sits in her math class and tells the teacher she doesn't need Algebra in real life. A classic, funny moment, but this book isn't that. It shows you how the Statistics are used, and why they are important. There are probably many analysis' that you won't need, but you can at least still see how many other people would need and use them frequently.

Then about the Excel part.
The book handles this more easily than the statistics part. Basically because there are not many changes in Excel from any particular version, and if there are the author details out what they are (which is pretty great in my mind because I have used Excel for 15+ years and can't break down all the various nuances in the versions).This is also a good quality because it really doesn't matter which version of Excel you have.

I would say that while the book details steps very well for the Excel process and procedures, you really need to have at least basic knowledge of Excel in order to use this book. But I also think that is a good presumption, as if you didn't know basic use of Excel (how to set up spreadsheets, input formulas, etc...) then you wouldn't be looking at a book on Statistical Analysis in the first place.

So what can you expect out of this book?

Like I previously alluded to, this is more a Statistics book than Excel book. I would say that you can expect to glean "practical use of statistics" where you just happen to use Excel to do so (because in this day and age nobody would be using pads of paper). In fact I put the whole practical part in quotes because I think that would be a good type of title. It isn't theoretical, and while it could be considered textbook statistics, the fact that the book shows how to use statistical concepts in real world analysis.

That is really the golden nugget here, because statistics is a thought process. It isn't about an equation to plug into and get an answer. It is how to think about organizing and reading your data to see what it tells you.

Similarly, Excel is a very powerful program, but unless you as a user can think of how to work in the program to find a solution to what you are looking for, then you will never unlock the true power of how Excel can work. The book doesn't go into this as much as I would like, but it covers more than enough statistics to make up for it.

Excellent course supplement

I can’t say enough good things about Carlberg’s Statistical Analysis for Excel 2013. I have been using it as a supplemental text in an MBA statistics class, and it’s been very helpful. Of the four or five similar books that I bought on the subject, this is the only one that I’d recommend, and I do so with no reservations. It would be especially helpful with any introductory statistics program.

The author goes into a good deal of depth about the statistical formulas and tests (no calculus required). This aspect helped a lot in understanding the mechanics of the various analyses, and how each part of a test contributes to the result. He includes ‘manual’ calculations using individual formulas, as well as Excel’s built-in formulas and Data Analysis tools. I can contrast this with other course materials (especially those from undergraduate social science statistics courses) that just focus on the type of test to use under certain circumstances, and brief interpretations of the results.

The example files are also quite useful (another thing that I found lacking in other similar titles). The author includes backward compatible formulas for earlier versions of Excel, which I found indispensable for use at work, where I have to use Excel 2007.

This Book is a Keeper!!!

WOW!!! Reading this book is like re-taking my Mathematical Statistics course, except without using a dedicated statistics program supplied the university. It is an excellent refresher course that is superbly structured in which the reader builds his/her knowledge of both statistics and MS Excel's Data Analydis Add-In. Until I read this book, I had never understand how to fully use the Data Analysis Add-in package (or its earlier versions) as MS Excel's explanation is deplorable. It's of little or no help whatsoever.

I particularly like the manner in which the author doesn't require the reader to read each chapter sequentially. He allows a little wiggle room by referencing prior examples and inserting notes that specifically reference pertinent points discussed in prior chapters. Also, his step-by-step approach to charting is fantastic. As an example, I never would have envisioned using MS Excel Charts to illustrate an overlapping comparison of "areas under the curve", let alone figure out how to do it.

This book is an excellent reference tool, which allows the reader to apply statistical analyses to everyday situations while utilizing a software program that in all likelihood the reader already owns.
