Chicken Soup with a side order of get up and go!!!

I have to admit I opened this book expecting to be served up leftover chicken soup. To my surprise, the inspirational stories in this book moved me in two ways. One was to tears, much more so than Chicken Soup for the Soul. The second was to act. Unlike Random Acts of Kindness, these stories inspired me to be an Earth Angel, to perform the grandest miracles humanely possible. It also reminded me to thank the Earth Angels in my life. Jerry and Lorin Michelle Biederman breathed a new life into the stale inspirational market.

An absolutely wonderful book of stories about ordinary people who made a difference in others lives....You will cry and laugh reading about these awe inspiring people. Hopefully they will become a part of your life and then you in turn will share this miracle of love with others. I highly recommend this book for readers of all ages.

Although these actions may seem to have little in common beyond their use of body exposure, they all share the notions that something can happen when you take your clothes off and that the act of disrobing can have social and political consequences. Moreover, these groups illustrate the often paradoxical views of the exposed body—by both the participants and the observers—and how such bodies operate in the public sphere. Even when the voice is silent, the body still speaks; Naked Politics considers what is being said.

Poorly written

I was required to buy this book for one of my classes. As a straight-A student this has been, by far, the worst written educational books I have studied. There are blatant errors in the math examples. It may be translation errors on the publisher's behalf but I find the book doesn't flow easily or understandably. If any teacher is thinking of using this book for their class then be well prepared to re-explain everything to the class.

Needs polishing

I was required to get this book for a class. My biggest gripe with it is that there are lots of typos and it seems as though the book did not go through an editing staff to clean it up. Also, there are a lot "fluff" sentences in the text that are merely opinions and do not add to the reader's technical understanding of the material. I would not recommend purchasing this book if you just wanted it as a reference.

I purchased this book for a class. There are some typos. My biggest gripe is that it is no available electronically. I hate having to carry books around with me. I'd rather than just carry my computer and call it a day. I'm renting the book, but it arrived on time and does have some good information.

About the Author

Mary Acton was Course Director of the Undergraduate Diploma and Advanced Diploma in the History of Art at Continuing Education, University of Oxford. She continues to teach at Oxford University and works as a freelance lecturer, and Learning to Look at Paintings is based on her experience over many years as an art historian and teacher. She is the author of Learning to look at Modern Art (2004)

How to assess color from black & white pictures?

Mary Acton organizes her technique of appreciating art well. Breaking the parts down to Composition, Space, Form, Tone, Color and Subject Matter, the reader is taken on a systematic course to discerning a work of painted art. With plenty of examples to illustrate her points, and the clear, straightforward manner of writing, it is easy to understand and follow.

I have 2 issues with this book -- neither of which targets the writer. (1) I appreciate the handy size, making this book very portable, but it is too small to properly show the works of art. Reproducing master works on offset printing with any appreciable quality is already a tremendous challenge without the size compromise. And more grievously, (2) there are only 29 color pages, with 1 image per those pages. For a book on Art, that is woefully under par. Mary discusses points on color against black and white images, many of which lack contrast data, especially in shadow regions, rendering her notes impossible to grasp. I had to refer to other books and the Internet to supplement this publication.

Frankly, at the prices that Routledge charge for their books, I'd expect more than what I got. Yet, the content more than made up for the production shortcomings. So much so that I also ordered Mary's other book -- Learning to Look at Modern Art. I'd recommend this to anyone who is interested to learn how to better appreciate art. Just keep the Google Images page open. ;)

Fine introduction

Composition, space, form, tone, color, subject-matter, and other pictorial elements of the plastic arts are considered and their interrelationships explained in this handy introduction, with over ninety well-chosen illustrations, some in color.
The author, an experienced art teacher, has also included illuminating essays on drawing and its purposes, looking at prints, a handy glossary of art terms, and references for further reading.
Highly recommended as eminently suitable for an Introduction to Art course, and for anyone else interested in learning to see more in paintings.

Informative

I enjoyed this book on the principles and elements of design. I think she selected exemplary pictures to illustrate her point. I especially enjoyed the chapter on "subject matter". The only drawback of this book was having to flip back and forth from the reading to the painting. Also, she talked about some of the paintings color combinations that were printed in black and white. In the paperback version some of the details of the paintings were lost because they were reproduced on a small scale. Overall, though I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning about design elements.

This reading is necessary to understanding prejudice .

As a sixth grade teacher,I found this an absolute must in exposing students to the realities of prejudice and how "blind" rational people can be. When it comes to being intolerant of those who are different from us, children should be taught that prejudice is something they are not born knowing. Educators need to be sensitive to these issues, and since it targets a twelve year old boy it is most suitable for this age group. This story makes for quite a few open-ended discussions regarding respect for parents, survival, and prejudice. Please don't hesitate to share this book with your students.

with this book I was left with the distinct impression that this book is most useful as an historical artifact

This book is a collection of essays based on very outdated research. The majority of the references are from the early 1990s with many from the 1980s. It seems to me that someone put together a series of very old articles and made a book from it. When comparing the content with neuroscience since 2005, I found many theories that needed major revision and conclusions that would not be accepted today. By comparing Joseph LeDoux's popular book, Anxious, with this book I was left with the distinct impression that this book is most useful as an historical artifact. Very disappointing since it cost so much and the subject is important for our family.
