Kenneth Shiskowski, PhD, is Professor of Mathematics at Eastern Michigan University. His areas of research interest include numerical analysis, history of mathematics, the integration of technology into mathematics, differential geometry, and dynamical systems. Dr. Shiskowski is the coauthor of Principles of Linear Algebra with Maple, published by Wiley.

Karl Frinkle, PhD, is Associate Professor of Mathematics at Southeastern Oklahoma State University. His areas of research include Bose-Einstein condensates, nonlinear optics, dynamical systems, and integrating technology into mathematics. Dr. Frinkle is the coauthor of Principles of Linear Algebra with Maple, published by Wiley.

Undergrad indie student likes this book so far

I'm finishing Chapter 5, and here is some of what I like about this book (in no particular order of presentation).

1. Written about as clearly as popular texts such as Howard Anton's Elementary...
2. Good balance of theory/proof and calculation.
3. Introductory chapter on Mathematica is good.
4. For students new to Mathematica, downloadable code is available at the book's website. Code is written such that it appears to run on MMA 6, 7, and 8.
5. Authors respect the past, but are not stuck in it. They clearly understand that computer algebra systems need not rot a student's brain.
6. The proof of many important linear algebra relationships presented in the text are left as exercises for the student (in the homework sections of the text). This helps the motivated student develop independence so important to maths.
7. Solutions manual (comes with book) is no lazy thing. As necessary, steps are clearly shown and good explanations given.

I have the impression that Shiskowski and Frinkle are unpretentious fellows, at least as interested in teaching as in pleasing those maths instructors who still won't embrace CAS's (at least when others are looking). Quite clearly, S and F value and enjoy theorems and proof; just as clearly, they value and enjoy the integration of modern CAS's into the teaching process. This is a huge plus in my opinion because is saves a great deal of study/practice time, expands what can be covered in a course, and allows students to be exposed to more realistic problems - not just problems so simplified that they are manageable with paper, pencil, and hand calculator. Also, CAS's like Mathematica and Maple make possible study of some of the informative (and I think beautiful) geometric bases, interpretations, and applications of linear algebra.

This book is in its first, but I hope not last, edition. As such, it doesn't give one all the colorful formatting and non-substantive content commonly found in more established works. But who cares about this besides greedy publishers and poor students? The absence of fluff in this book keeps the price relatively low. Compare others at $120 for text plus $35 for solutions manual and about $40 more for a CAS manual (that is likely not really integrated into the text, but more like slapped onto the end of it).

Highly recommended for the ambitious EE student

I am an electrical engineering student in the northern US, but my university has very separate math and engineering departments. The linear algebra class at my school does not focus on applications or technology at all, so I decided to teach myself and took a gamble on this book.

I've read many math texts and found that the common theme among those that teach well is a conversational style of language combined with many examples, problem sets, and solutions. This book is written in an enjoyable and accessible manner that does not attempt to cut words so that it can have the appearance of added rigor. It has plenty of rigor all on it's own, and the material is that much more accessible because the author is willing to talk the reader through things. The integration of Mathematica is equally enjoyable and will no doubt provide me with a tool that is very handy for solving problems that would be tedious or nearly impossible to do by hand.

The problems at the end of the sections are on point for the preceding lesson. They are separated into problems meant to be done by hand and those meant for Mathematica. Many of the Mathematica problems are tailored to serve as a teaching tool to show someone why they would want (or need) a computer algebra system. This could have been something that got in the way of learning the math, but it isn't overbearing and adds to the text.

My only critique is that this is not the right book for people who do not want to learn a computer algebra system. Obviously, as that's ~30% of what the book is teaching. It's right in the title. But then why wouldn't someone be interested? Mathematicians and engineers need a computer algebra system to speed up their workflow, and this book helps you kill two birds with one stone.

Also of note is the companion website which contains Mathematica code for problems and examples, as well as a comprehensive solutions manual. Problems are thoroughly worked out and explained which is utterly critical and something I wish more texts put emphasis on.

I have not finished the book and will update when I do, but I honestly couldn't wait to review this text. This is a real treat after a year of some very inaccessible math texts.

TLDR: Overall, very impressive! If you want to learn Mathematica and linear algebra, especially if you are teaching yourself, this is the way to do it!

The Wild as Evolution's Canvass

Jason Mark’s new book belongs in the collection of anyone who cares about the environment or enjoys the wilderness, but whose language can’t seem keep up with the accelerating changes around us.

Today, we find ourselves in a near apocalyptic tautology: at what point of environmental degradation does wilderness become so tampered with by human activity and pollution that it ceases to be wild? At what point does wilderness stop being wild if – ironically – we are trying to intervene to save our current conception of wilderness? Mark helps the reader find her own way out of a wilderness of language that surrounds our concept of the wild. Yet, his style is more like the hands-off backcountry trip leader who says "time out everyone, take out your map and compass and figure out where we are and where we’re going."

In other words, I didn’t feel like Mark was forcing “The Answer” upon the reader, but rather was guiding the reader to think about the question of wilderness – and wildness – in a new (or maybe old) way. While so much environmental literature today is written with the heart of an insurance actuary or an economist at a corporate-sponsored think tank, Mark is obviously someone who enjoys the wilderness through his heart, and on his own two feet. He captures the numinous, the ineffable. He writes as someone who has been humbled by nature, and who would be a solid backpacking companion.

The narrative forces the reader to re-evaluate their idea of what constitutes wilderness. By the end of the book, Mark reveals his thoughts on wilderness in a more direct way: “A “post- wild” world would put human civilization into a kind of solitary confinement. There would be no Away, no frontier or edge to civilization. There would be no Other, nothing to contest our will. We would be left all alone.” Perhaps freeing the wild makes us free.

I do get the sense, however, that many who read the book who don’t already have the appreciation and deep emotional connection to the wild might not really “get it.” Mark captures this frustration when, for example, he laments that fewer younger people and minorities are in the wilderness. So on one hand, I was inspired by the awe, appreciation, and humility that can only come from spending a lot of time communing with the wild. On the other, I feel despair that without time in the wild, how do you value it fully, broadly, and deeply? Should we then be surprised that we increasingly base our decisions on conservation and environmental policy on utilitarian calculations?

I think Mark’s contribution to the literature here is to underscore that wilderness is a canvass where evolution can play out. “Wildness preserves evolution,” he writes. “The daily audacity of creation unfolding, keeps open the possibility of new forms of life.” Here, we are almost encouraged to “hug the beast” and embrace accelerating changes on the precipice of the Anthropocene. The Anthropocene is happening, so let’s make sure we preserve as much landscape that is free for evolution to do its thing.

There is a real tangible benefit to the human species for preserving landscapes for evolution to play out. Yet, Mark transcends the practical and really does capture the value of wilderness for its own sake. Are there still any wild places left on our planet?

That is the main question Jason Mark tackles in Satellites in the High Country: Searching for the Wild in the Age of Man.

In a era of global GPS, ocean acidification, climate change and market globalization it's hard to imagine anywhere that hasn't been impacted by humanity. Thus the declaration of our era as The Anthropocene, the era when man began to change global ecosystems on a planetary-wide scale.

Going out to search for "Wilderness" in such an era is quite a task. Jason Mark takes us on a number of adventures "outside the anthill" of civilization, mostly in the American West and Arctic. Along the way he brings some of today's greatest thinkers on this subject and asks them (usually around a campfire) what they think about this question.

What we discover is that wilderness is no longer strictly defined as "untouched." What matters today is that there are still places "uncontrolled" by humanity. Places where animals and forces of nature have the power to put you squarely back on the food chain. Places where paying attention and "mindfulness" are required simply to stay alive. Places where we can come into direct dialogue with all that is.

Wild places deserve our protection because they have a right to exist outside of our control, and we need wild place to visit so we can get be beyond the reach of human civilization.

"Satellites in the High Country" continues the conversation started by Henry David Thoreau, John Muir, Rachel Carson, John McPhee, and Annie Dillard about our place in the world, and our duty to protect all that is not human civilization. I was thrilled to see a Generation X journalist take up this conversation and push it forward. In the era of cyber-everything, this book could not have arrived at a better moment.

Jason Mark has hit it out of the park with this one. Satellites in the High Country is thoughtful and thought provoking, exciting, lucid, and literate. On the surface, Mark's book offers a series of engaging narratives, each of which will resonate with anyone who has ever found solace or adventure in wild places. Woven throughout these stories, and tying them together into a greater whole, is a thoughtful inquiry into the concept and role of wilderness in the age of humanity. This is an important book, and I look forward to seeing more from Jason Mark in the future.

Good overall, tax chapter is particularly useful

This book has good coverage of oil and gas exploration for a broad audience, but could stand to have a few more illustrations and tables to explain some of the concepts. It's got a pretty thorough step-by-step explanation of the process from exploration to drilling to (hopeful) profit. Who knows what black gold lurks under yonder plains; this book can help you find out. It's a reasonably quick read and pretty dense.

The book's coverage of the AMT (Alternative Minimum Tax) is particularly useful; for many energy investors the AMT is becoming more and more important. I haven't seen any other books of this type that so thoroughly cover the impact of the AMT. Did you know that the AMT can result in double-taxation? This book explains how to structure your investment so that if you make more than $100,000 (which hopefully you will) you'll be able to minimize the risk of getting hit with a huge AMT bill.

Hopefully the next edition will fix the problem with the charts; it's hard to follow some of the tax examples without having a table or a chart or something.

small book; very good

This is a small book -- only 75 page with notes, but it is very well written and tersely but competently explains the essentials of the subject. It is very readable and pitched just right--- it is intelligent and does not oversimplify but avoids being technical, too detailed or too dry. The chapters are: 1) exploration and production basics parts 1 & 2; 2) Tax advantages to the Ol & Gas investor; 3) Deal Structures; and 4) applying financial concepts. In its small size the book succeeds in painting a comprehensive overview of the subject-- it explains the mechanics of the drilling enterprise, the roles of various parties (including the landowner,operator and various active or passive investor and business partners), decision points in the drilling enterprise and allocations of expenses and profits. An excellent and intelligent introduction to the subject.

A MUST-HAVE FOR THOSE TOUCHED BY TARKOVSKY'S WORK

I agree with points made by some of the various reviewers below. First of all, this book is vital for the general viewer of Tarkovsky's films as a tool for coming to a greater understanding of the director's methods and motivation. They offer synopses of all of the films (with the exception of MIRROR, whose structure is so unusual as to make a synopsis impractical -- it's analysed almost scene-by-scene in the body of the book) as an appendix -- an essential aid, considering that all of them are subtitled in English, and, as the authors point out in several places, those subtitles are of varying accuracy from edition to edition. It's also very difficult for even the most adept subtitle artisan to convey things such as sarcasm and irony -- very often viewers who don't speak the language in which the film was shot are left in the dark where such subtleties are concerned. The knowledge the authors have accumulated of the Russian language and culture are put to good use here in helping the Western viewer of Tarkovsky's incredible films come to a more complete understanding of them -- an understanding that will always, given the unique nature of this director's work, be tempered by the viewer's own soul and spirit. These films speak to me on that deep level, as I know they do to many, many others -- this is part of what Tarkovsky had in mind, I believe, when he stated that he wanted the audience to work as hard as the director in 'creating' the finished product.

Individual films are brought into focus in chapters devoted to them -- Tarkovsky's work-path of creation is followed in detail, outlining conception, planning, struggles with the authorities, critical and public responses, and the director's reflections on the finished works.

Some of the other reviewers take exception to the critiques offered by the authors -- and indeed, it's easy to see where their own opinions enter into the writing process. I believe this is going to be a natural part of any book on film, and has to be taken by the reader with a healthy grain of salt. I didn't agree with everything they wrote -- perhaps some of their speculations as to Tarkovsky's psychological and emotional components are based on more information than they were willing to include in detail in this work. Where the authors and I diverge on our views and opinions in no way tainted my enjoyment and appreciation of their efforts.

I would recommend this volume very highly -- alongside Tarkovsky's own work, SCULPTING IN TIME -- both valuable keys to unlocking the treasure that is the work of this artist.

Indispensable, comprehensive, but a bit flawed

I love this book and it represents a huge undertaking on the parts of Johnson and Petrie. They've done a great service to the film community with this volume and I give it an enthusiastic recommendation - with minor reservations. Buy this book, but realize that the authors most likely had to apply a degree of 'academic prudence,' meaning that there are echoes and whispers of a sober cynicism. It seems the authors, as academicians, felt obligated to question the aesthetic integrity of the Tarkovskian world, and one certainly cannot blame them for attempting objectivity. But do not let that spoil it and do not feel inclined to agree with everything expressed within just because this is such a fine work. It's a great research tool and an enjoyable read, but it might disrupt your views of Tarkovsky to an extent (which could be bad for romantics). I don't find "A Visual Fugue" flawed for this reason, but rather because at times it merely serves as a forum of opinions and arguments while making no argument of its own. It still gets five stars, though, because it really stands tall in the ranks.

Past the myth towards the magic

The first chapter's title is "A Martyred Artist?" and the question mark hints that some cherished preconceptions are about to be overturned. Tarkovsky seems to have enjoyed thinking of himself as a martyr, and the image has been enthusiastically endorsed by those in the West who believe in Hollywood freedom and Moscow manipulation - four legs good, two legs bad. Johnson and Petrie provide a perspective without slipping into that Charybdis of revisionist critics, the Dreaded Debunker Mode. The director emerges (from extensive interviews with a commendably large number of his collaborators) as a deeply dedicated, troubled artist, charming, impossibly perfectionist, sometimes childishly arbitrary and spiteful, hell to get along with but definitely worth getting to know. After some useful background information on the various hoops to be jumped through in the Soviet film industry and on Tarkovsky's own methods, there are individual critical chapters on all the major works after Ivan's Childhood, and the information they offer is often invaluable for a proper appreciation of the films. Particularly useful is the chapter on the outstanding masterpiece Andrei Rublev, which fills in some of the historical detail behind Tarkovsky's elliptical storyline. At the end are detailed plot summaries, running times and notes on different versions (interestingly, films like Solaris, released intact in the USSR, were horrendously hacked about in the "free" West); and four chapters covering matters of style which are perhaps the least substantial parts of this very satisfying book. The authors are remarkably fair to the Soviet film industry, presenting its bureaucratic meddlers' committees as not so very different from a Western studio or executive producer, and certainly not as monolithically philistine as we've often been led to believe. Tarkovsky was allowed virtually to make Stalker twice over when the original version didn't satisfy him - something Stanley Kubrick might possibly have finagled for himself, but it's hard to imagine anyone else in the West being permitted to do anything of the sort. Quite apart from its very fine critical comment, this book is a much-needed corrective to those myths about the director which have distracted too much attention away from the films themselves - attention which, as the book also shows, they ruthlessly demand and richly deserve.

Why Explore?

I will start by apologising for the length of this review, but "FOREVER YOUNG" is more than just another biography/ space book, it is an historical document, the collected thoughts of by far the most experienced human space voyager. As such it represents essential reading for anyone interested in human spaceflight engineering or history. Whether or not one agrees with the author, his views are the product of far greater first hand experience of human space exploration, in both operational and management roles, than that of any other human being that has so far lived.

I have both the hard back and Kindle editions. The quality, quantity, presentation and range of illustrations provided in both leaves a lot to be desired. However, apart from the personal pictures, these are available from other sources. The Kindle edition is good, but the index is basically useless.

The book itself is not for novices. Nor, contrary to what readers may expect from the expansion of the title "a life of adventure in air and space", is it a book of "boys own" adventure stories. A level of knowledge of engineering, piloting, space history and astronomy is assumed. If the reader lacks basic knowledge in any of these areas then portions of this book will be confusing or even incomprehensible. Thankfully the author covers the full span of his career, unlike many other astronaut biographies. However, the result has been that some areas receive a very thin treatment indeed, this book could easily have been twice as long to do them all justice.

This brings me to the book's most serious problem, it is literally riddled with errors, far too numerous to recount in any detail. Whether these are merely the result of appalling proof reading, I cannot say. They range from easily spotted typos, for example the statement in the foreword that Mr. Young commanded Apollo 15 (it was Apollo 16), through the obviously wrong but requiring more investigation. Did VA-216 fly A-1/ AD-4 Skyraiders or A-4 Skyhawks? The answer is both, but the reference in the book should be to the A-4 Skyhawk. Or the probably wrong - but perhaps it's an obscure new term ("delta feed", do you mean "delta V"?), to the perplexing (Gemini X "we were standing on our seats in the cockpit", no they weren't, only Mr Collins was, which the author obviously knows, so why does it appear?). To photographically provable nonsense (LM-4 had no landing gear - er, yes it did). I could go on for hours but you get the idea. "FOREVER YOUNG" may yet form the basis of a space geek "spot the mistake" game. One problem is that if you don't know your stuff you may come away with some very funny ideas, and considering their apparent source, you'd be within your rights to be pretty adamant that they were correct. In the future the book will be viewed as a primary source, and Space history doesn't need this. I really hope that subsequent editions correct the litany of errors. The other effect for me was that it made me wary of much of the rest of the content, if the simple stuff is so riddled with mistakes, how accurate is the rest?

Next, the style, this book reads in many ways more like a collection of notes (or, considering the author's professional style, memos). It is quite annoyingly repetitive, some points are made well out of chronological sequence without specifically saying so. At other times explanations are lacking to the point of being obscure. The author insists on quoting burn times, delta Vs, orbiter touch down sink rates etc at almost every opportunity when these add absolutely nothing to his tale. If he felt that their inclusion was important then by all means include them in an appendix for those who haven't read the mission reports or programme summaries produced by NASA. Meanwhile, in many instances the author neglects discussing the reasons or his thoughts about the events being mentioned. Here's one example, taken from Mr Young's first voyage to the Moon on Apollo 10:

"I controlled the firing of the service propulsion system, which accelerated us to 2,960 feet per second and placed us in a lunar orbit of 59.6 by 169.1 nautical miles above the Moon's surface. We did additional maneuvers to get our orbit to 61.2 by 60 nautical miles."

Well firstly that should be decelerated, and I think a quick explanation of why they didn't aim for an exact circular 60 nautical mile orbit would be in order - (since he considers a precise listing of orbital parameters to be worth while, why not explain, not all readers will know this). Not to mention that a little more description of what it was like to enter lunar orbit for his first time would have hardly gone amiss.

Or from that same voyage, how's this for a description of reaching the fastest speed ever by any humans:

"I was in the commander's seat operating the entry. We were on automatic and came in at a speed of 36,315 feet per second - a little over 24,760 miles per hour - which proved to be the fastest entry of any Apollo spacecraft . . .
Our guidance system commanded full 'lift-up' through peak acceleration, which was 6.8g. When the forces backed off to 5.8g, the spacecraft rolled to 90 degrees . . ."

You might as well just read the mission report or technical crew debriefing. Why the fast return? How did it feel, noisy, rough? What could you see? Did anyone say anything? In fact, in general Mr Young's descriptions of his six space missions are disappointingly bland. Of course, many other astronaut autobiographies suffer from the same problem. As a final word about style, be sure to also read the 'notes' section at the back, much of which should, I feel, have been incorporated in the main text.

Every now and again we are offered a glimpse of Mr Young's famous insights and sense of humour. Talking about Apollo 16:

"The hardest part of all human extravehicular activity on the Moon was getting back into the lunar module".

Or awaiting the first space shuttle launch:

"I was also thinking about what a grand time it would be if Crip and I used those ejection seats just to fly through the 5,000 °F plumes of the solid rocket motors!"

I just wish there were more.

As an autobiography the book is useful in filling out the blanks in Mr. Young's non-space flight career, although again he misses the opportunity to really involve the reader. So what's it like when the canopy comes off your F-8 at around 500 knots? I still don't know, but at least I now know that it happened. No opinion on the introduction of the mirror landing sight and angled deck to naval aviation? On the personal side it is pretty tight lipped, although we now know about his mother's unfortunate illness. We get one line on his first marriage "it was a mismatch from the beginning". Whilst wholly in keeping with Mr. Young's character, I feel this limits the book's wider appeal.

In discussing his career after his final space flight the author is more passionate and you get more of an insight into what drives him. The discussion of some of the space shuttle's problems is illuminating, although considering the constant inadequate funding and safety issues I cannot concur with his conclusion that the programme could have gone on until 2030. His discussion of the NEO threat is interesting and I wholeheartedly agree, I hope that he continues to push for action, preferably on an international basis - it is not a problem for Americans alone. In his thinking about how we can all make the next trip forward, Mr Young makes a powerful case for a return to the Moon, with more passion and logic than some of the common "space mining" etc suggestions of past decades. He gives a modern rationale of the need for exploration, far more useful than Mr Mallory's much quoted exasperated retort to a journalist (which is now mistakenly thought of as the reason by many people).

Overall this is by no means the waste of reader's time that, for example the late Mr Cooper's and Mr Shepard's books represent. It is not the essential "personnel file" that Mr Hansen's biograpghy of the late Mr Armstrong provided us with. Nor is it the riveting first person view of space flight provided by Mr Collins and Mr Worden. What it is to me is essential but flawed reading - badly in need of a corrected and revised second edition. Perhaps there is a market for a "FOREVER YOUNG" study guide, correcting errors and explaining the details. (A paperback edition containing many corrections has since been released. Unfortunately it is still far from problem free, however, I recommend that version over the hardback). My star rating for the book is an average of my view of it's importance (5), and its quality as literature (3). Mr Young was born just one month after Mr. Armstrong. In view of the latter's recent demise, I'm just glad that we got this book at all.

Traditionally large numbers of people have managed to get stirred up about various problems, for example nuclear weapons and global warming. However, they've all missed the big picture so I'll leave you with a final thought from the author who, until now has "been everywhere, done everything and said very little":

"Single planet species don't last."

A Disappointment

I've been greatly looking forward to this book. John Young has had an amazing career in Nasa and having read all the astronaut autobiographies from the era I was looking forward to hearing his views on a great many things. Unfortunately the book is a great disappointment.

My problems with the book are not the errors which have been specifically covered in other reviews. The problem is it's not really an autobiography. The book is more of a technical retrospective on the missions Young was on. Young's life as an astronaut, his training and relationships with his fellow astronauts is secondary at best. For example his first mission was the first Gemini mission with Mercury veteran Gus Grissom. I really wanted to hear from Young about Gus. How they got along and worked together. How and why Young got assigned as the first of his astronaut class to such an important mission. Unfortunately we hear none of that. What we get is a technical diatribe about his mission. This Young does over and over in terms of every one of his missions. They are described coldly with little insight into the men he works with.

It would be one thing if this book was suppose to cover the technical aspects of Gemini or Apollo but it's suppose to be an autobiography. We're reading the book because we want to know about John Young and his experiences from a personal perspective. The technical points of these missions are covered in other books and generally done much better than they are here. As it is Young's descriptions of the missions are impersonal at best. Many times he will use acronyms or abbreviations without explaining what they mean. For example he might make reference to the LPN without telling the reader that LPN stands for lunar portable magnetometer. If you didn't know that already you'd not be sure what he's talking about.

The book finally goes off the deep end in the last chapters where Young goes on a very long technical diatribe about the Space Shuttle. Again it would be fascinating to hear his views on this era but instead mostly we get technical descriptions about how the shuttle works which again is covered better in other books.

In the end I found this to be an extremely disappointing book. Many books by astronauts such as Mike Collins, Gene Cernan and Deke Slayton are fascinating reads that are not only entertaining but important references on the era. Unfortunately Young's is of little value as it adds nothing from a personal perspective nor does it work as a technical book on Gemini, Apollo or the Space Shuttle which 80% of the book tries to be.

Not what I expected

I worked on John Young's Gemini 10 spacecraft and on his Apollo 10 and 16 launches. I was therefore really looking forward to this book, but I was disappointed.

As has been mentioned, there are far too many technical errors, most of which should have been caught by a minimally qualified proofreader. I can guarantee that if you landed on the moon, you would remember that the LM had 4 legs, not 3, and that you extracted the LM after TLI, not before, and that you decelerate into lunar orbit, not accelerate. And Young would remember he flew on Apollo 16, not 15. It seems obvious that John Young did not read the final manuscript, as I'm sure he would not have let these glaring errors remain in the book.

Young is known for his dry wit, but there were few examples of this. Much of the book is a regurgitation of tedious details that are of little interest.
