Mark S. Luckie is a digital journalist and founder of the multimedia journalism blog 10,000 Words, a popular online guide to trends in technical journalism. He has produced multimedia and interactive stories for The Washington Post, the Center for Investigative Reporting, Entertainment Weekly, The Los Angeles Times, The Contra Costa Times, and is a former crime and justice reporter for The Daytona Beach News-Journal. He is a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley School of Journalism where he received his master's in journalism and Bethune-Cookman College where he received bachelor's degrees in broadcast production and Spanish. He has served as a multimedia skills trainer for the Knight Digital Media Center and has lectured various collegiate groups and professional news organizations.

The book I've been waiting for

In a field that changes daily, if not hourly or faster, it's nearly impossible to find a course text that captures the most important skills. It's even harder to do while contextualizing the practice in such a way that students know full well they're going to have to work beyond the book to keep current and are likely to want to do it. I'm introducing this book in the fall multimedia bootcamp (16 weeks of immersion) I teach at the Cronkite School (Arizona State University). At the moment, the book's my newest BFF. Clear, intelligent, wide-ranging -- and "gets it."

I have been a broadcast and print journalist for the past twenty years and I recommend this book for any journalist or aspiring journalist who is trying to navigate the complexities of New Media. Luckie describes the skills that today's journalists need to be a proficient and confident in the world of online media.

Amazing study cram book

This textbook has put me through my two years of respiratory therapy classes. I found it in the library and have been using it ever since to study with. It is to the point and well written. I like it so much that I plan on buying it for clinical year. I am hoping that the author decides to publish a newer edition soon though. This book covers everything you will EVER be tested on. Definetly, good to have!

Keep this book on hand at work

This reference work is as dry as they come; it's also as complete and inclusive as they come. You won't find any illuminating discussions of respiratory techniques or patient management concepts here. The entire book is written in outline form -- definitely "just the facts, ma'am". You won't be tempted to stay up late reading this one for entertainment. So if you are a student, especially if you have not yet begun your clinicals, you don't absolutely need this book --- YET.

But as soon as you DO make your first appearance in a clinical setting (even as a student), make sure you always have the most current edition of this book on hand -- and keep it in your locker, or your colleagues will walk off with it. This exhaustively comprehensive reference will recall for you every little detail of a procedure or concept, all the ones that are right on the tip of your braincell and you can't quite remember them exactly. If you encounter material in the book that is gibberish to you (and you will), you can consult the equally exhaustive bibliography for citations to works that will provide you with more detailed explanations.

THE BEST OF RESPIRATORY CARE

This is the best reference book out there. The authors taught me all I ever needed to know in respiratory care and I've been a therapist and respiratory care educator for 25 years. The book is in outline form and will give you information and the facts.... It doesn't read like a novel, but you will have all of the facts you may ever need. Highly recommended. Many respiratory care instructors will hide this text from students because it doesn't give long and detailed explanations on topics. If you are a student looking for a great book you won't sell back, buy this bok. This book will be a one stop shop to study for your exams and the NBRC exams. If you are a therapist looking for one reference book---- this is it!!!!

A "Must Read" for Everyone!

Not just another book about Tai Chi! David's book is a 7 course meal disguised as a dessert. He explains the history, philosophy, and experience of Tai Chi practice in a conversational manner. His insight and advise is profound and practical without being judgmental or didactic. I have put this book in the hands of all those I know who play tai chi and many who are seeking to improve their lives. I now better understand why and how the western mind often feels alienated by the teachings from the east. And, I have many more techniques at had for dealing with the eventual challenges of inner development. Thank you, David! This is one of the best books on Tai Chi philosophy, history, and development I've read - and I've read most of them.

A Great Book on T'ai Chi

I'm currently working on a certification as a life coach and part of the process involved selecting several projects to work on which would become part of our coach offering. T'ai Chi was one of the project choices I made and this book was what has allowed me to get a deeper overstanding of the art ( I have a background in martial arts but limited knowledge of this one). The book is well written - save for the annoying typos - and really gives you a feel for the art, its usefulness and means of implementation. i recommend this book to anyone who wants a thorough break down of the art; if nothing else, it's a good read!

Not for Tai Chi Novices

As a former student and informal practitioner/"player" of Tai Chi, I was hoping that Dorian Ross might convince me to be more serious/formal in my personal Tai Chi practice. I was initially intrigued by the "sound" of the title, and the sample I read reinforced that feeling. However, the totality of the book left me more disappointed than satisfied.

There was a lot of information -- some techical, some theoretical, some historical -- and Dorian Ross' personal story that opened the book was very uplifting. His writing style was an interesting combination of technical language and personal interpretation, and for a good portion of the book, he had me with him. What eventually caused me to feel less connected was the rambling and repetitious nature of his narrative.

In many instances, I encountered material in the second half of the book that had already been covered earlier. What really disturbed me was the not only the redundancy of the information, but also the verbatim nature of the repetitions. In some ways, it read like a cut/paste narrative, emphasized by his frequent comments about "returning to a concept later in the book." Part of this is the responsibility of the writer's editor to notice, so in this particular case, it appears that his editor was either absent or negligent.

The historical aspects of the book reflected diligent research and deep respect for the Oriental origins of Tai Chi, and any student of Tai Chi would appreciate and learn much from these elements of the book.

The technical elements of the book could have benefitted from some illustrations; in fact, at one point it looked like there was a note to "add a diagram" despite their total absence, another indication of careless or nonexistent editing.

The philosophical elements of the book were interesting but could have been a more significant aspect of the book, especially given the nature of the title.

If you have never taken a Tai Chi class, I would not recommend this as an introduction to that martial art.

If you have some experience with Tai Chi in your life and want to expand that experience, this may or may not satisfy you.

I didn't find what I was looking for, nor was I motivated to make my Tai Chi practice more formal/extended after reading it.

Thus my 3-star rating.

The human condition in the 21st century.

A popular saying in Spanish says if life gives you lemons make lemonade. This is how the book starts and also how it ends. The narrator, a Hispanic man in the US, ends up caught in situations he did not expected and has to figure out the best way to get something positive out of where he is and what he has. This is a story of resiliency, survival and the pursue of dreams. Stories of poverty, humanity, friendship and love in the age of virtual realities ( maybe more live virtual mirages) bring the reader to an analysis of the human condition in the 21st Century. Great book (written in Spanish).

Omar Corral has written a fantastic tale of college life and the trials and travails of a graduate scholar dealing with wine, women and song. The stylish structure, poetic imagery and edgy flourish make this an engrossing read from start to finish. While it is in a college setting, the subtext speaks of bigger concepts--independence, freedom, sexual politics and mania for art. I read this overnight on a flight and enjoyed it thoroughly!
Looking forward to Mr.Corral's future literary output.

They may serve as a reference you can choose from over time, or teach you something about learning from your own past to help. 

There are many tools we can use to deal with adversity which already exist. Automobile insurance reimburses you if your car is stolen/damaged. Vaccines prevent various illnesses and auxiliary sluice gates prevent a dam from bursting or overflowng. These are all wonderful things, but deal with a known peril or perils. But what if we encounter an uncovered or unexpected type of adversity? In addition, we also don't know when or possibly how to be vigilant. For example, how can we possibly prepare ourselves to deal with our best friend losing his parents after they're shot during a bank robbery? 

I'm a simple guy and have no way to predict the future, so there has to be another way to prepare for adversity. But, why go to the trouble of looking for some tool or framework to help in the first place? Because it acts as a sort of emotional insurance policy since it's not unheard of to be overwhelmed by an unexpected problem. Not only may the original issue remain unresolved but it might compound and drive you into a rut as you struggle to deal with it. An example would be for social drinking to become more of an issue while you're trying to deal with your friend's parents' killing. 

So, if we can't predict the future and know about specific tragic events ahead of time, what can be done? How do we better prepare to make choices, learn and move on? 

LIFETIME REFERENCE BOOK: I can't say I'm the world's biggest expert in this area. Who is? But I do have a lot of experience successfully dealing with many of life's issues (ex: family deaths, chronic illness, divorce, loss of children, unemployment, crime, financial loss, employment discrimination). Enough experience to know that there's more than one way to cope. So, I've drawn on my coping skills and written a guide you can use for a lifetime. The tools are adaptable to your personality and comfort level because I've provided 4 models you can select from: Process, anecdotal, inspirational and humorous.

Refreshing open book we all can relate to

Well written with unpretentious candor and humor. Andrew definitely touches many bases in the game of life. Most of all there is hope and reality that many times, when all else fails nothing beats positive attitude and clear mind. I simply enjoyed it and honored to have traveled challenges of life with the author through this book. Very easy read thanks to Andrew's honest sincere style.

This book is a must read for all of us.

This is an honest and engaging account of one man's life. The author takes a hard look at his own life's serious challenges, both medical and personal, and derives life lessons at each turn.

He has surmounted many tragedies, and has developed a general plan for people to remain positive. The author has learned how to retain a sense of humor about life and has keen insight into his own. This book explains how each of us can develop our own blueprint for coping with life's serious adversities and for mistakes we've made. The author sets an example for overcoming these obstacles and for becoming better people.

I was inspired by the author's determination to move forward despite suffering numerous set backs. Also, the book is easy reading and funny as well. It ends on a high note and is highly recommended.

Life Is about possibility and Hope.....and never forget that.

Those words above are one of many life's lessons in which this author presents to the reader. A engaging story based on constant bad circumstances and the bumps and bangs along the road of the authors life. The author faces a mire of complex life struggling situations all rife with adversity. His inner strengths and great ability to confront and reflect upon his personal challenges saved him. It is a book about lessons, a book about personal tests and triumph. It is a story of hope, relentless perseverance, victory and gratitude. There are many valuable lessons to be learned in an entire lifetime, the author offers many and all of his "Life Lessons" are well worth the read.

Excellent Series

This is the fourth title of nine in the Merrill Reading Skilltext series (starts of with Bibs, then Mack, Joy, Nicky, etc.). We have been using this series as adult literacy tutors and it has been working very well. ‘Nicky’ is targeted for reading level grade 2.2 students. You can do so much with this instructional information (create word lists, Power Point or Keynote presentations, etc.) and each title includes a pre-test for the next level. I highly recommend this series for anyone learning to read--children or adults.

We used this book last year as part of a pre-set curriculum, and our daughter really enjoyed it. She can now read really well too!

Good stories with follow up questions in comprehension, vocabulary, and phonics. Good for early second.
