One major drawback (so far)

I bought this book because it seemed to be similar to Post-Colonial Studies: The Key Concepts (Routledge Key Guides), which has been extremely informative. I haven't read much of this book so far but already it has revealed one major disappointment in comparison with Post-Colonial Studies - namely that it does not include a Further Reading section after each entry. In Post-Colonial Studies there is a list of foundational or significant works given for each term, which references an extensive bibliography at the end, something valuable beyond compare if you are looking to go past just the basic information given in the book. The Kindle version of Post-Colonial Studies also includes hyperlinks that refer the reader to terms within a given entry that have their own entries elsewhere in case the reader is unfamiliar with the other concept or would like more information on the other term. This would have been extremely useful in a book on key terms in literary theory, where many of those concepts are built on, reactions to, or otherwise informed by other concepts, movements and ideas in literary theory. Otherwise, Key Terms in Literary Theory seems pretty good so far but it suffers greatly for not having included these two extremely useful features.

About the Author
Andrew Loomis was born in 1892. After studying art he moved to Chicago, eventually opening his own studio, working in editorial and advertising for most of the top clients at the time including Kellogg's, Coca Cola, Lucky Strike and more. He also became renowned as an art teacher and his instructional books on realist illustration and art are acclaimed classics in the field. He died in 1959.

I was worried about QUALITY from earlier reviewers... but....

I had this book as a child and dearly loved it. I wanted to order it for my daughter... but I noticed many reviews talking about the poor quality of what they received... I almost did not order it! But, I noticed that all the reviews that mentioned this were before the date this edition was published... so I took a chance and.... WOW! The Titan Books printing is even better than my original copy! I love the lighthearted and fun way this book approaches drawing, yet with serious technical skills demonstrated.

It's Andrew Loomis - Enough Said!

Not as valuable as the other Loomis titles recently reprinted by Titan, but still very much worth purchasing. If you don't already own the other four books buy them first. In particular, I would recommend "Creative Illustration". At the price Amazon is offering this beautiful, hardcover edition for it's nothing short of a gift. Titan has done the world of illustration a tremendous service in making these classics available again. Before this project began any Andrew Loomis book would set you back a couple days wages - if you could find them. Loomis was a master at his craft and equally gifted as an instructor. Any art student would benefit from a thorough immersion in these works. I was first introduced to Loomis by way of his magazine ads. He created advertisements for many of the foremost companies in America during the 1940s, 50s and 60s. After these encounters I was compelled to purchase "Creative Illustration". Let me just say, had I waited a few years I could have put another one of my kids through college with the money Titan's reprint would have saved me. Not quite, but you get the point. As I still own the original and just had to compare the two, I bought Titan's new edition. It's a beautifully produced facsimile.

I'm beginning to think I'm reviewing the wrong book. As to "Fun with a Pencil" it is just as the name suggest - lots of fun. Filled with great suggestions for the aspiring cartoonist it presents characters straight out the Golden Age. Perky young ladies and quirky older gentleman combine with helpful hints on perspective and composition to produce a worthwhile book of instruction.
Anything associated with the name of Andrew Loomis is gold. And this volume is no exception. It is only by comparison to the four previous works that this title should suffer. If you can shell out the do-re-mi, buy all five books - you won't regret it.

This book is well produced in every respect. It is constructed to take years of wear and tear just like its companion volumes. I thank Titan, again, for the commitment they made to this series and wait to see what they have in store for us in the future.

More on cartoon-like figures. For Beginners

[[VIDEOID:mo2G9TR0JFH491J]]This is the fifth book from Andrew Loomis that's reprinted by Titan Books. It's a well done reprint yet again.

This book is more light-hearted compared to the other Andrew Loomis drawing books. It's almost like Figure Drawing for All It's Worth except you get to draw more cartoon-like characters. The figures have more caricature features, with more exaggerations. But the underlying drawing principles remain the same, such as the construction of the head and body. There are lots of examples.

The main section is on drawing the head. The other lessons look at body proportions, poses, hands and feet, clothing, perspective, and lighting and shadow. Those lessons are short but do cover enough material for you to get started.

I'll recommend it to beginners who are looking to draw more cartoon-like characters. If you want to draw more standard human figures, you should get Figure Drawing for All It's Worth.

very interesting

I found this book quite fascinating. I have been reading Erik Larson's wonderful "The Devil in the White City" but since that comes with virtually no illustrations, I bought this book primarily for the photographs, of which it has a great many and which go a long way to conveying just how huge this fair was (there were 735,000+ visitors on the day that had the highest attendance rate).

It also fills in information Larson's book lacks about the exhibits themselves, the individual state and country buildings and the Midway as well as statistics on how much food was served every day and how many bathrooms were available plus it shows pictures of the moving sidewalk that took visitors who arrived by boat to the fair itself; the Xerxes telescope; many displays and decorations made out of corn and oranges; the foreigners who were part of the Midway attractions; the Wooded Island; the first automated paint sprayer (with which a crew of three was able to paint the interior of the entire Manufacturers and Liberal Arts Building in only six weeks); a lifesize statue of a wooly mammoth, then thought to have been the largest animal to have ever walked the earth; and several pictures of the Ferris Wheel under construction. It also has a table showing what attractions were available and how much they cost and one indicating which architect designed which building (something Larson's readers will appreciate).

The only real problem I had with the book (and the reason for four stars instead of five) is that it's printed on regular paper stock and not on glossy paper so the photographs are somewhat blurry and grainy and not as crisp as they would have been had the publisher used different paper. Also the book provides a copy of the map of the fairgrounds given by Montgomery Ward to it's customers but this map is too small plus it's printed so that part of it lies in the book's center crease. I think it would have been better if the publisher had had a map drawn and used that or had found one that provided more information. There is a three dimensional map of the Exposition available on the Web -- it would have been nice if something like that had been included as well since it's impossible to get a comprehensive, birdseye view of the Fair (nevermind one in relation to Chicago and the surrounding community) from just the photographs. There is also a bibliography and a somewhat incomplete index. I don't know how this book compares to other pictorial books on the Exposition but it was fine for what I needed and had lots of bits of interesting trivia besides.

The White City revisited

I purchased this book after watching a two hour PBS special on the Columbian Exposition. My imagination was captured, and I wanted more. I purchased the excellent The Devil in the White City, by Erik Larson (which I also recommend) and this book at the same time. They compliment one another quite well. I believe I enjoyed both more by pairing them than I would have enjoyed them individually.

The photos contained in this book are astounding. Even living near Chicago, and having been to the location of the Midway Plaisance and having seen the few architectural remnants of the fair (most notably the Science and Industry Museum), it is hard to imagine the scale and overall aesthetic of so many Greco-Roman buildings in one place. The book was very useful for making the fair come alive in my imagination, and for giving a general sense of scale.

As an aside, if you ever visit Chicago, take the time to visit the location of the fair. You can take a walking tour of the area, and begin to create your own internal map of where the buildings stood. Finish up at the Museum of Science and Industry (which remarkably doesn't have an exhibit on the fair, one of the most important events in Chicago's history!) You will not be disappointed.

Devil in the Details

Our book club reviewed Devil in the White City about the Chicago World's Fair, and our leader brought this book to show us pictures of the locations and scenes mentioned. I was especially impressed by the pictures of the Ferris Wheel. This book was indispensible for background, setting the scene and adding flavor to the book we reviewed. I thought it did a thorough, informative job in depicting the Fair, and enriched our reading of Devil in the White City.

The wonders of a competent psychology book

Throughout my college experience, I have often been disappointed by the lackluster caliber and quality of most text books. However, whilst studying from the text book "Psychology" by Sandra Ciccarelli, an entirely different learning experience has occurred. Throughout the book, a combination of text and illustrations merge to form an immensely enlightening experience. Each picture is adeptly illustrating a key concept of their section, and gives background details on many of the major experiments prevalent in the breakthroughs of psychology. Furthermore, through Ciccarelli's ability to simplify concepts towards an introductory level, it helped introduce key concepts and foster interest in the content for the reader. As I studied from the material, each simple theme of the chapter received its own individual section. Through this thorough approach, it gives the reader a change to digest the information and create a vastly superior knowledge of the material versus other rushed text book. Finally, by defining key words on the side of the textbook, it helps lethargic readers quickly study for a test without having to adopt a hunt and find methodism. Through these various techniques, Ciccarelli creates an insightful and ingeniously formatted text book that suits both curious learners and lazy students.

Great Textbook

I used this textbook for my general psych class. I liked this textbook and thought it was very easy to navigate. It flows nicely and has good visuals. I hope my school continues to use this author's work, as it is very well-organized and made it easy to study for tests.

Overall, I liked this textbook and think others would, too. From what I gather, they have come out with a new edition. I'm not sure how different the two are, but if this edition is any indication of what we can expect from the author, the new edition should be just as good.

good introductory psychology text

This is a good psychology textbook for beginning psychology. The author's writing style flows well, is easy to read, and makes the topics come to life. It's not as "dry" as some other textbooks are. The chapter summaries and review questions make it easy to grasp the main concepts. There are also helpful online resources.
