As marijuana forces its way into the mainstream, voters are thrown into countless debates about the benefits and consequences of lifting the ban. The main argument in favor of lifting the ban is the simple fact that legalizing the drug will raise billions dollars in revenue for the government. I believe that American voters should pass a proposition to end the prohibition but also create strict regulations around the sale and use. Marijuana might not be a product that voters should encourage the use of, but at the same time, the benefits of the plant can help the American budget crisis exponentially.

Marijuana is the most commonly abused illegal drug in the United States. Currently, it sells for 300 to 400 dollars per ounce on the street. The drug is derived from the hemp plant Cannabis sativa. It can be identified by the green and brown mix of dry and shredded flowers, stems, seeds and leaves. Cannabis contains over 400 different chemicals but, Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, otherwise known as THC, is the main brain-altering chemical (Basic Facts About Drugs: Marijuana). The percentage of THC in the plant determines the potency of the drug. Ancient Assyrians were the first known users of marijuana, but an Israeli scientist was the first to identify the THC and it’s effects on the human body (Smith).

Engaging and insightful

This book has lots of fascinating information about emotions in the workplace. It is presented in a very accessible style that kept my interest consistently with plenty of new scientific evidence to support the theories. I particularly like the 'managing with heart' section that includes topics such as: teamwork; decreased productivity; cost to bottom line; cost effectiveness of emotional intelligence; the benefits of being emotionally competent versus the consequences of stress and emotional obliviousness; & how to criticize effectively. My favorite thing I learned? Laughter & smiles are the most contagious emotion, much more so than depression. I highly recommend this book if you want to create a better workplace!

How leaders can "help people to get and stay in the brain zone [flow] where they can work at their best"

These are articles selected by Daniel Goleman to be anthologized in a single volume as his research continues on one of the most important and least understood business subjects: emotional intelligence (EI). Opinions are divided as to its origins. My own opinion is that the distinctions between intellectual and emotional capabilities can be traced back at least to Homer's Iliad and Odyssey. Charles Darwin has much of value to say about the importance of emotional expression and E.L. Thorndike introduced the term "social intelligence" which was later characterized as "people skills." Others such as David Wechsler, David McClelland, Howard Gardner, David Payne, Peter Salovey and John Mayer, Reuven Bar-On, Richard Boyatzis, and Annie McKee have also made significant contributions but, in my opinion, Goleman has done the most valuable research on emotional intelligence (usually in collaboration with those whom he always acknowledges, such as Boyzatis and McKee) and then, in a series of brilliant books and dozens of articles, helped more people than anyone else ever has to apply the EI principles in all of their relationships, including but certainly not limited to the workplace.

What we have in this volume are nine essays, accompanied by an Appendix in which Goleman briefly shares new insights with regard to several leadership competencies previously discussed in one of his books, Primal Leadership (March 15, 2002): self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management. Whatever their size and nature may be, all organizations need leadership at all levels and in all areas. If viewed as "gardeners," C-level executives should have a "green thumb" that enables them to "grow" leaders for all those levels and areas. The aforementioned core competencies will provide a framework for that immense ly important process.

As I completed my reading of this book, I was again reminded of my favorite passage in Lao-Tzu, Tao Te Ching:

"Learn from the people
Plan with the people
Begin with what they have
Build on what they know
Of the best leaders
When the task is accomplished
The people will remark
We have done it ourselves."

Therein lies the power of emotional intelligence and anyone is capable of developing it and then continuously strengthening it. For those preparing for a career in business or have only recently embarked on, and who aspire to become leaders, this book is a "must read" -- as is its companion volume, The Brain and Emotional Intelligence, both published by More Than Sound (2011). I also highly recommend the aforementioned Primal Leadership as well as LEADERSHIP: A Master Class, a set of nine DVDs which provide Daniel Goleman one-on-one conversations with several "masters" of thought leadership: Daniel J. Siegel ("The Leader's Mind"), Warren Bennis (The Socially Intelligent Leader"), Erica Ariel Fox ("Getting Beyond Yes"), Claudio Fernández-Aráoz ("Talent Strategy"), Bill George ("Authentic Leadership"), Teresa Amabile ("Create to Innovate"), Howard Gardner ("Today's Leadership Imperative"), and George Kohlrieser ("High Performance Leadership"), a set also produced by More Than Sound (2012)

A Must Read for all Leaders

If you are over 40, your introduction to work probably included someone warning you, "The boss might not always be right, but remember he is always the boss." It was not that long ago when command and control was the accepted standard for managing a business.

There are a number of shifts that have made the top down, command and control style of management much less effective. First the type of work has continued to shift to that of knowledge worker. And the younger workers have much different attitudes and expectations about what they want from and are willing to accept in their work.

As local and even national boundaries have less control over where work is being done, all businesses are becoming more competitive. Therefore, it is imperative that leaders find the most effective and efficient ways to inspire and engage their workers.

One of the crucial factors in attracting and retaining a highly engaged and effective workforce is the emotional intelligence abilities of the leadership. According to Daniel Goleman, the author, "Nearly 90 percent of the competencies that distinguished outstanding performers was attributable to emotional intelligence factors rather than purely cognitive abilities."

Leadership: The Power of Emotional Intelligence is a compilation of the key ideas from some of Daniel Goleman's books - Emotional Intelligence, Social Intelligence and Primal Leadership.

In this book Mr. Goleman clearly shows that Emotional Intelligence is imperative for anyone who aspires to effective leadership. This book captures the essence of his ground-breaking book on Emotional Intelligence. You will gain an extremely good overview of what EI is and its impact on the workers, their performance and the resulting profits of the company.

One of the better chapters in the book details the six leadership styles, how each style impacts the culture of the organization and when it is appropriate to use. One thing I knew from observation but found interesting to have confirmed is the damage done by command and control type leadership. The six styles are: Visionary, Coaching, Affiliative, Democratic, Pacesetting and Commanding (or coercive).

If your goal is to better understand what it takes to bring people together and get the most out of them, this is a very important book. It is rather short, about 100 pages, is easy to read - can be read in about three hours - and contains a substantial amount of information.

If you have been meaning to read any of Mr. Goleman's books but haven't got around to it, this will give you the heart of much of his writings in a rather short and easy to consume book. The book is short but the lessons are very valuable. Even if you are not a employee/employer, these lessons apply to all social interactions. You need to really understand the importance of Social and Emotional Intelligence and this is one of the fastest and easiest ways to get a good working knowledge of the subject.

Highly recommended.

An excellent synopsis on the Qing Dynasty

This book beautifully describes the social fabric of life during the Qing Dynasty. As the author claims, she was privy to previously undisclosed Imperial records and has unearthed new insights into Qing customs.
I was introduced to this book after reading Jonathan Spence's "Treason by the book". Mr Spence, perhaps the foremost sinologist writing in a Western vein, has himself praised this book for its fount of new information on the Qing period.
I couldn't agree more and can also add that it is highly readable.

Solid well written social history

In this work Dr. Rawski argues convincingly for her side of the sinicization debate regarding the Manchu conquest dynasty, the Qing (1644-1911). For those of you who are new to the field of modern Chinese history you may be interested in reading the articles of Rawski and Ho Ping-ti (He Pingdi) found in the Journal of Asian Studies, published in the mid-90's. The debate that was started by those articles is still of great importance to modern Chinese history, and it seems that although Rawski and others have presented a very strong case no one as of yet has been victorious. Many scholars still hold the views of Ho Ping-ti (or some version there of). Although, I suspect that over time Rawski's views will triumph. The argument, simply stated, is the question - to what extent where the "conquest dynasties," especially the Qing (Manchu) Dynasty, sinicized? In the past, scholars (perhaps dominated by the sino-centric Chinese interpretation) have agreed that foreign powers who dominated the Chinese empire forsook their own cultures in favor of a Chinese identity. This included the adoption of the Confucian civil service tradition as well as the Chinese language and many other Chinese cultural traits and behavior patterns. In recent years however, scholars have given evidence to support a very different view of dynasties like the Qing. A certain level of sinicization is undeniable, and no one challenges the fact that the Manchu banner-elite adopted a very Chinese approach to governance and cultural issues, however they also held on tightly to their own culture and went to great efforts to distinguish themselves from the Han Chinese as a ruling elite. The Manchu language, which many scholars had previously considered irrelevant (when studying modern Chinese history) has here become increasingly important. Rawski goes to great lengths to demonstrate the ways in which the ruling elite of China did not adopt 'Chinese' cultural practices but instead tried to be all things to all people. This book is well written, except for a few minor stylistically uncomfortable passages, and really proves her point. Unfortunately, it does drag on a bit at times. Rawski gives an extremely detailed account of life in the upper echelons of Qing society focusing on the imperial household. There is a large body of work here and it will take several readings to truly imbibe all this book has to offer.
If you are looking to deepen your knowledge of the field I recommend "Manchus & Han: Ethnic Relations and Political Power in Late Qing and Early Republican China, 1861-1928 " by Edward Rhoads. It is a bit shorter and focuses on the ethnic and political divides between the ruling elite and the Han Chinese.

Better Textbook

This is far from being the perfect book for IGCSE CS, but its much better than the only alternative ... the white book by Watson and Williams (hodder education). Unlike that book, the material here is properly divided into digestible chunks, illustrated with adequate pictures and diagrams and sufficiently explained. On the downside, unlike other Cambridge Science titles, there is no accompanying disc with activities and multimedia (rather strange since this is COMPUTER SCIENCE).

This was a book that a professor in ESP studies introduced to our class on the topic. It is a quick read that gives an overview of several very specific ESP contexts. These are truncated case studies, essentially, and while each do not give in-depth details of the course content in each case study, it does give the reader and over-arching structure of ESP course construction and needs analysis for both the novice researcher and educator, alike. Overall, it's a good resource with out-of-the-ordinary samples which makes it go from a good resource to a great one.
