Too narrow in scope

Interesting concept but layout design and quality of image prints have room for improvement. Also the scope of people featured should've been broadened beyond the realm of artsy-hipsters for more varied content.

Great conversation starter

So really, what WOULD you take if you had to escape a burning house? This wonderful book contains lists of what people from around the world said would be top on their list; a photograph of the items accompanies each list. While many of the participants seemed to lean toward the artistic side (hence "cameras and accessories" was the top category of items listed), some of the more memorable were from the younger and older ends of life's spectrum. From a 10-year-old girl describing her hair brush: "I literally bring that brush with me everywhere. It's sort of like a good-luck charm" to wisdom from a 70-year-old: "letters and ojects from a person very dear to me," the lists are interesting and will probably make every reader pause to wonder what those items are that should be in a suitcase near the door. Two other favorites: "Bottle of gin to reassure me during the fire. The same goes for a box of cigarettes and matches." and "A book of a hundred handwritten things my wife likes about me." A great conversation starter and yes, I'm revisiting my own list.

I'm not sure what I was expecting when I ordered this book, but I left feeling somewhat disappointed. I felt like something was missing from the premise of the book. I was hoping for something deeper, I suppose.

learning to transfer is 90% of the battle

REVIEW FOLLOWS A FEW REMARKS ABOUT TRANSFER OF IMAGES - I just got this book as a present and am astonished how well it meshes with all my other dover books - this was one I was going to get - and it was a present from a fellow engraver. BUT it's not just for artists, it's also a wonderful coffee table book if put out with a few others (see my review of Florid Victorian Ornament Florid Victorian Ornament (Dover Pictorial Archives) to learn why) - it's a long review, but you'll understand why it's a VERY cheap way to 'dress' up your living room, and keep guests occupied while you are out of the room. Perhaps 'occupied' is an understatement -- when they begin to see color in black and white drawings, they will be astounded by the art form -- weather graphic, or as is my case, engraved. And the longer you look at the line drawings, the more you will see, and soon you, like me, will find yourself looking at a single page for 10 minutes and wonder where the time went! Forget curved lines, though they are amazing, what you can do with simple straight lines is beyond your imagination right now, then add in the curves and it's a new world you are peeking into!!! FIVE STARS WITHOUT QUESTION!!! Light, dark, shadings, hue and saturation of color -- all in black and white line drawings -- it's amazing! TEN STARS!

most reviews have said that the lines are far to complicated to transfer. this is because there are many ways to transfer - from special wheels with needle like spikes that come out and you just 'connect the dots' - to the use of Methenol, Ethenol, Xylenol, or toulene -- each ink company has it's own chemical that works best -- as does the paper you use. Check the paint section of your hard ware store, and you may even be makeing a trip to an auto parts store too for something to transfer on to. Supermarket and drug store 'alcohol' is too much water and won't work well without a LOT of smudging.

photocopy or print the page, place ink side down, and practice with a Q-tip until you get your transfer down -- it will be from a solid line to a sometimes broken line - and as a firearms engraver in hard metal, I NEED the fine-line shading to bring out light and shadow. Often I can transfer lines as small as 000 - and if not, with the original there, I can chose the correct fine-liner to make it happen. With me, there IS no 'erase' or 'do over' -- you are having your grandfathers Winchester, or your Great Grandfathers Winchester engraved, or a civil war Sharps that your Great-grand-daddy used in the War of Northern Aggression -- and that gun cannot be replaced, sometimes not even repaired at great cost - so being exact is more than important, missing a strike, or skidding across the metal can result in law suits and thousands of dollars for damage to irreplaceable objects -- so my lines and my gravers have to be sharp and clear, and the 50-120 strikes per inch have to be perfect each time, every time. Just like a sculpture -- you can't have a 'woops' and put the arm back on. Ink is much the same way, but often you can cover your mistake, in some arts, there can be no mistakes. Ever - so you get your transfer right until it's perfect.

Sometimes you may need to 'seal' the surface so the transferring ink doesn't soak into and 'smudge' on the object being transfered to.

Buy, or go to your library and get a copy of James B. Meeks "the art of engraving' where he has hints about how to transfer -- from using china white, to auto-body primer, to many other substances - Art of Engraving: A Book of Instructions and I'm sure that there are books in your own field that will help you transfer -- often a community college or state University will have an instructor in a lab who will take the time to answer a question of someone not enrolled in their class. Especially on something as important as design transfer. if they want you to enroll as I've seen ONE instructor requie -do it, you can always immediately withdraw, and get most of your money back. It's what 'Office Hours' are for: individual instruction of students -- use them -- and get out -- but when you think of it - free use of a kiln and glaze can be rather appealing -- esp if you take an incomplete, and can use the lab until you complete the final assignment for up to a full year in most places, with no more money up front -- I used to teach in college, it's a trick i learned when I learned to engrave -- even taking an F so I could repeat up to three times with an incomplete each time -- pay for three semesters, get 9. It can be a bargain. And in Lab courses you can become an unofficial 'aide' and pick every last morsel and detail and secret from your professors brain! You are, in essence a pod person who sucks your professors brain dry! WHILE you face problems you have not even encountered yet, but might some day -- when you'd have a solution and not need help!

I have found most of these Dover books exceptional in most every respect -- you can see my review of Florid Victorian Ornament (Dover Pictorial Archives) for an idea of what I think of these 'design' books -- and if nothing else, they make a wonderful 'coffee table book' -- but I suspect that after reading Meeks, and talking ot a college instructor, you will learn a LOT about transfer.

In hard metal engraving the problem is to not 'chip' the surface the transfer is on, I imagine that in leather or clay where you 'draw' the design in using different sized wooden or steel dowels, this problem will not BE a problem.

Amazingly enough, this book was returned to me TODAY with one I loaned as a thank you for the loan -- and I can see the problem you faced, but it's no different from the florid Victorian book -- lean to transfer -- practice -- I usually think of it as "playing around" with an idea, because it's more fun than PRACTICE!! (uggghhhh!) - and I think the book will come alive for you -- I already have seen what it has done to a flint-lock and matching knife -- and some of the lines are 0-00-000, though most are 1's and 2's and I can look at the original, and the transfer and see very little difference.

Join a guild, or ask a professional who teaches because the professional who teaches has probably read a lot about transfer - and IT IS A PROBLEM faced by those who lack the 'secret' knowledge. And if one says no, keep looking, we had a teacher who said that he would not teach or discuss transfer except how to transfer for your own personal collection, and it was ONLY smoke transfer, perhaps the oldest and most primitive transfer possible --and one you could NEVER use from a printed page or someone else's work -- So find out from another teacher -- or go to a large city library,and look in an index under 'transfer' -- in EVERY book, for each author may have their own pet way, or have a unique, nearly fail-safe way.

When all else fails -- which is rare -- get a number one or softer pencil and draw over your photocopy, then 'burnish' the back, transferring the pencil onto the object, then 'draw the line you grave, and grave the line you draw' as my Master told me.

This book looks AMAZING -- and so it gets five full stars! And I can already see where it can be mix and matched with other Dover books for design -- wow! --Dover -- NO COPYRIGHT DESIGN! Viva Dover!

Great reference

I don't agree with the previous 2 reviews of this book. I think it has plenty of great elements to incorporate into any design. Maybe they are right about being too complicated for crafts. I am a graphic artist, and the more complicated, the better. I especially like the details of the mystical creatures that are featured in this book. Lots of flourishes and victorian type ornamentation like most of Dover's books in this genre. I believe this book stands on it's own and worth having it as part of your clipart library.

This book is excellent

A couple of reviews have mentioned that the designs in this book were too intricate and therefore they gave it less than stellar reviews. However, I believe that this is the books strength and not it weakness. I design websites and the images in this book worked perfectly, precisely because they were more detailed.

A one-of-a-kind masterpiece

The world of Ferdydurke seems at first to be concocted out of equal parts of Kafka and Swift. There is the absurdity of Kakfa: events occur for no apparent reason, and the main character seems to be under some mysterious hypnotic spell. And there is the savage humor of Swift. Violent conflict erupts between the followers of two opposed and equally absurd and ridiculous systems of belief. But as the book progresses, it becomes clear that Gombrowicz has put his own special stamp on this world, and created a type of fiction that is totally unique.

The plot line is simple: a man of about 30 years of age is abducted by a priggish professor and finds himself, for reasons unexplained, transformed into an adolescent schoolboy. The novel consists of the "adventures" of this anti-hero in the world of adolescence, which he views with both fascination and disgust, and from which he remains detached, and yet at the same time with which he becomes intensely involved. (Ferdydurke is above all else a novel of unresolved contradictions.) Although the narrator is subjected to all the humiliations of an adolescent schoolboy (patronized by adults, frustrated by hopeless desire for a girl who disdains him, etc.), he also retains an adult outlook. In fact, it may be said that he is the only character who is adult (in the psychological sense of being self-aware) and who struggles, not always with success, to remain sane. Part of the genius of the book is that the adults in it seem crazy from the narrator's perspective as a youth, and the adolescents seem crazy from the narrator's perspective as an adult. In spite of its simple plot, Ferdydurke bursts with a dazzling exuberance of incidents, contradictions, characters, and digressions. Readers who demand strict linear plot development in a novel should probably look elsewhere.

Ferdydurke can be read at many levels. It is not surprising that a novel which features conflicts between two equally absurd systems should come out of 1930s Poland, beset as it was by two powerful opposed enemies, Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia. Ferdydurke can also be read as an exploration of the fragility of the adult ego, of the fine line between "maturity" and "immaturity". The violent schoolboy quarrels which so fascinate and repel the narrator seem like absurdist, distorted parodies of very serious adult matters. And this novel is also about hidden, dark passageways in the human psyche. The narrator confesses to thoughts and behavior that most of us would never want to allow into the daylight of consciousness, much less to own up to.

Ferdydurke is not a difficult read, but it is quite digressive and very different from what most English-speakers expect a novel to be. Until this new translation, the first directly into English, it was effectively unavailable. This book is not for everyone. But it is a fascinating read for those who are seeking a multi-faceted, complex, and uncompromising (one noted critic has called it "Nietzchean") exploration of what it means to be a "mature adult", and who are not looking for easy answers or Hollywood endings.

Linguistic archetypes and immaturity

"Ferdydurke" by Witold Gombrowicz has finally been properly translated into English. Not that this is an event worth mentioning in general, but the point to be made is that the world of translation offers room for all kinds of mischief and sloppiness. Who would have thought that it were perfectly acceptable for publishers to allow translation from a second, and not native tongue? Imagine, for purposes of illustration, that a work of a classic British author translated into German not directly, but from Suahili, for this was the language the book was first translated into. Would you be satisfied with a product of this type? This was the fate of Gombrowicz, his native tongue was done away with, and the Anglo-Saxon world of bibliophiles had had no other choice but to read a lemon. Perhaps this is the revenge of the Heavens on the author himself, for never was there any other Polish author who had his native country in such a low regard as he did. In his "Trans-Atlantyk", Gombrowicz dared to ridicule everything a Pole holds dear, together with the whole idea of a nation as such. Were he to live today, he would embrace the idea of convergence and the global village of consumptionism, as opposed to Europe of Nations. That was one of the main reasons for Gombrowicz's emigration to Argentina, where he spent almost all of his literary career.
"Ferdydurke" is an early novel by this author, and it's never as crass as the aforementioned "Trans-Atlantyk". In fact, it constitutes part of a literary canon in Poland to this very day, and there is no educated Pole who hasn't read or at least heard of "Ferdydurke". Scenes from this book, gestures, and neologisms entered the mass vocabulary, and once you learn some of these expressions, you cannot unlearn them, for then there is no better way to express yourself, but to use the phrases coined by Gombrowicz. Whatever issues Poles have with this author, one thing is certain: we are grateful to him for augmenting our language. Gombrowicz created an archetype of a confused man, whose karma is to move back in time, back to school, with the mentality of an adult. I will even risk a claim that this fact alone lies at the very heart of science fiction - for how might that be possible, and what would happen if such occurence took place? How would that affect the object in queestion? Perhaps my perception of this problem is a bit skewed due to my occupational hazard of a scientist, but for me, "Ferdydurke" is a laboratory novel, where with a literary set of tools we analyze both the situation, and the object, in the vein of the medieval alchemist. This novel, hardly known in the English-speaking world, will be an exhilarating reading experience for you, provided that you will trust me and pick it up. The amusing analysis of the immature world the protagonist found himself in, mixed with elements from all literary forms, from plain mystery, via comedy, to sophisticated analysis of society, makes Ferdydurke an experimental novel of potential interest for all bibliophiles and lovers of the nonstandard.

Zany to the point of seriousness

Ferdydurke is out of print! It has been a battle to get this book openly published in Poland, but look at how English-speaking consumers conduct their own censorship scheme. Yet there is a touch of Anglo-Saxon to the novel's madness: the upper class school boys, the title borrowed from the netherlands of H.G.Wells' corpus and much, much more. The novel questions whether there is such a thing as maturity, sending its main character back to school as an adult, where he is among boys who treat him as another boy (as does everyone else!). It also asks one of the great questions of our time: our characters are made by others; is it possible to escape this or are we merely prisoners of other people's influences? Something for us living under states who idolize individual choice to think about. But Gombrowicz's book is also full of comedy: slapstick, sharp irony, plot twists and philosophical fables. Jokes are used as an ideal way to pose serious questions. Furthermore, in its giant bums and staring contests it shows how much more you can talk about reality, including prudent insights into totalitarian life, through wild fantasy. The experiments of the novel - the unique fantasy, the invasion of the author and the symmetrical interjections - put it at the heart of European modernism. It is a landmark, albeit buttock-shaped.

1) Some of the questions/explanations are horribly written.
2) Some of the answers are inaccurate (or wrong, in my opinion).
3) Some of the questions are obviously meant to trick you (compared to the actual SAT Blue book test in US History, which is much more straightforward). So, using this book might cause the student to get into the habit of 'overthinking.'

A Review of Under The Covers by Claire Boston

I found this book and author from Net Gallery. We meet Elle, who we learn has fled her abusive ex. Alone, with her five-year-old son, and without any support, she has managed to pull herself up and open a bookshop café. However, she runs into some major hiccups, as she is busier than she expected to be and one of her employees failed to show up. During the chaos of trying to get things under control, George walks into the café and there is an immediate attraction between them. Elle is determined to push him away, since she thinks the last thing she wants is another man getting in her way.

"George has always been a sucker for a damsel in distress, and Elle ticks all the boxes. But Elle's not interested in being rescued by anyone, especially not him. She knows her taste in men can't be trusted, but fighting George's charisma is harder than she expected. And George, who is not one to ignore an itch, has found there's something about Elle that's got under his skin."

"When Elle's ex turns up to cause trouble, George must overcome his boyish flirtatiousness if he's to convince Elle to trust herself and let him into her life. But can Elle put her past behind her before it overwhelms her present?"

I was surprised that there was no teasing about George's name being George Jones, but that's just me. I absolutely LOVED this book and the characters, so I went looking for other books by Ms. Boston and found this was the third book in a series. I immediately purchased the first two books to read more about the characters that I already met in this book and then there will be at least one more book next year that I will buy as well. You definitely want to pick up this series and meet this wonderful group of people - you will NOT be disappointed.

UNDER THE COVERS is a light, easy to read sweet romance. From the get go, you feel for Elle and her struggle to make a better life for her and her son, Toby. Elle is determined to make it on her own, to not depend on anyone other than herself. Her tortured past has her guarded and there is no way she would allow herself to fall head first into any kind of romance with any man. What she didn't count on was a kind, charming man like George to step into her life.

George is determined to break down the walls Elle had built around her heart. From the first time he saw her, he knew Elle was in desperate need of being rescued, even if she didn't know it herself. He made it his mission to make her realize that she doesn't have to make it on her own, she doesn't have to struggle and go through life alone. As stubborn as Elle is against George's charm, he ends up making it impossible for her to deny that there is a definite attraction between them, a chemistry and kind of connection she had promised herself she would not fall for again.

But when the past she so desperately tried to get her and Toby away from catches up to them, she starts to slowly depend on George's support more and more, and soon George manages to break down those stubborn walls around her heart.

The one thing I did struggle with a little was George's character. He was just too perfect. Loving his damsels in distress, George comes storming in like a knight in shining armor on his white horse and saves Elle from all her problems. I like my heroes slightly tortured with a little of a dark side who needs some rescuing themselves, but that's just a personal preference. I found myself hoping that the author would show us a little naughtier side to George to balance out the whole good-guy persona. I did however like the instant relationship he had with Toby, and that made him a little more endearing to me.

Overall I found UNDER THE COVERS to be an enjoyable read and would recommend it to anyone wanting a light, sweet, low on the heat level kind of romantic read.

Under the Covers gets a 3 star rating from me.

Light-Hearted and Sweet Romance

Under the Covers (The Texan Quartet #3) is the 3rd book in a standalone series by Author Claire Boston.

This is the first book that I have read by this author and I found it to be a very light and easy read. Although, I felt that I didn’t need to read any of the prior stories to this one, I would be interested in going back and checking them all out at some point.

Under The Covers was about a woman named Elle, a mom who ran away from her abusive ex, Dean. Elle wants to open up a cafe to be able to support herself and her son and is quite adamant about doing it on her own, which I found quite admirable and brave.

George happens to be a part of a group who has helped Elle out and he is quickly enamored with her, and she with him as well. Due to leaving her ex only a just few weeks ago, Elle feels that she is in no position to be thinking about taking on a new relationship so soon but she does have a hard time denying her feelings for George.

George not only wanted to help take care of Elle because he could see what she had been through but he truly wanted her as a man who just wants a woman, lol! He was so sweet and caring and I loved that about him. I also love a romance where kids are involved because for me it takes on a whole new level of true and unconditional love! George was so patient and understanding with Elle, he was a really great guy.

When Elle’s past comes back to haunt her, it puts both Elle and Toby in a bit of danger, George can’t get to their rescue fast enough. Unfortunately with Elle’s history, getting her to completely trust him is no easy task and I was rooting for George all the way!

All in all this was a very light hearted and sweet romance with a touch of drama that kept my interest. It started off a bit slow but once it picked up, I found myself enjoying it. I didn’t fall head over heels in love with it but it was a nice fun book that was easy to read!

Innovation gets to work

Value Innovation Works picks up where the innovation guru's books leave off. This book gives the innovation practitioner a 10-Step Value Innovation Process roadmap with a rich enabling toolbox to get right down to work on innovation. Value Innovation Works provides wonderful examples of these tools in action and an amazing array of very practical insights. I've used the Value Innovation Process and it Works, very well! Follow it and you'll be able to move mountains.

Does just what it says!

I was really looking forward to the book having been at the workshops and having used the tools. I didn't think it was possible to translate Dick lee's energy, experience and clarity of thought into book form but he's done it.

The process is well explained with good examples. The focus is rightly on the most powerful tools I have found for the front end of innovation - identifying who really is your most important customer and value curves with metrics. I defy anyone to deploy these tools without creating a 'lightbulb' moment.

This takes Blue Ocean Strategy: How to Create Uncontested Market Space and Make Competition Irrelevant to the next level - focusing on delivering outstanding value to current customers as well as new customers. It doesn't need to be in every innovator's shelf - it needs to be in their hands.

I also especially recommend this book for new companies starting out who aren't clear about their target customers, who will buy their product and why - use Value Innovation to get this sorted before you go to market, it will work for you and you will develop your company based on value not product from the very beginning
