Every Go-Getter Needs This Book to Achieve Their Goals

I'm a total type-A and when it comes to achieving my goals, I can put a lot of pressure on myself... not to mention all the outside pressures of running a business, working with vendors, clients, and partners. This book has changed the way I look at my days, and how I can proactively approach stressful situations.
The tools that Sharon shares are really life changing. I've been using the trick to fall asleep when you've got too much on your mind, and it has resulted in some of the best and most restful nights of sleep since I started my business. I wish I knew this years ago when I was a teenager feeling anxious and stressed out the night before exams, too!
I've also noticed that I'm no longer trying to overcompensate in my relationships and dealings, which I learned through Success Under Stress was the indirect path to getting results. This book is based on so much in-depth research, and yet is so practical and applicable.
The exercises have helped me fine tune my focus or horizon point as Sharon calls it, and in turn have resulted in less stress and greater productivity. I've also found that I'm not reacting like I used to in stressful day to day situations, and I'm able to see when something is happening because of my fight or flight reaction, and now I have the tools to deal with it and help my body get back on track.
I believe this book should be in every business person's library, and in every corporation's welcome kit. Let's face it, we're living in repetitively stressful times and we need the tools to deal with this stress, so we can achieve all that we've set out to do! I can't recommend this book highly enough.

Conquer the New Normal with Your 50% and Intention

Author Sharon Melnick, PhD, wants to help you conquer the new normal with the tools and insights she as gained as a business psychologist who has trained and coached more than 6000 people. The new normal has most of us running around 24/7 reacting to a world that appears out of control and has us caught in time squeeze that keeps us off-balance and stressed-out. Melnick has "seen people who have coped and those who have not." She has identified a clear set of skills that distinguishes those who do and those who do not and has developed strategies that will enable you to succeed quickly, regardless of the obstacles - people, time, organizational hurdles, industry change, etc.
Melnick in "Success Under Stress" promises to help you gain control of your life, minimize stress, become more resilient, and become all that you can be. Her first and most important strategy is to implement the 50% rule. Every challenge, she explains, "can be divided into two categories - the 50% of factors we can control and the 50% we can't." These include interpersonal and macro-forces, such as someone's tone or behavior, industry changes, decisions by higher level executives, volatility in the global economy, illness, death, etc. Those things that are out of our control are magnets for our attention and distract us from keeping our eye on the ball. While left unsaid, the 50% rule is embodied in the "Serenity Prayer" and has been a success strategy for tens of millions.
The bottom line for all is to control only what can be controlled - your 50% -and take 100% responsibility for it. Sticking to this simple, but not easy to adopt, rule will keep you engaged with the key to your success - that which you can control - and keep you disengaged from those things that will suck you dry and lead to anxiety - that which you cannot control (the other 50%).
